Hello Friends and Family, this week is international deaf awareness week! This month is also considered deaf awareness month in some countries due to the many struggles and triumphs that have occurred over the past centuries. However, I will use this post to bring in remembrance one of the greatest oppressions the deaf and disabled have ever suffered. It came in the hands of the Nazis, who identified the deaf and disabled people with a blue band attached to their arms. In Ger...many, the disabled people were labelled to be "life unworthy of life" or "useless eaters" and were ether sterilized (unable to reproduce) or institutionalized only later to be executed. In 1999, at the world deaf federation conference in Australia, the blue ribbon ceremony was held in remembrance of the deaf who were victims of the oppression. Dr. Paddy Ladd, was the first to use the blue ribbon as a sign of this movement. Everyday until September 30th, we will recognize one deaf person who inspired many deaf and hearing people alike to show you that we are not exactly "worthless eaters" and that we can make an impact on this planet!
