Medical laboratory professionals are part of your health care team. They work behind the scenes, but their work has a direct impact on patient care. Medical laboratory professionals process and analyze samples to provide information vital to patients’ health. They are behind every lab test result, and their work provides answers to guide diagnosis, treatment and patient care. This National Medical Laboratory Week, we want to say a BIG THANK YOU! to all you wonderful #MedicalLaboratoryProfessionals out there who have selflessly and tirelessly worked through the pandemic. #MLTs #DCTs #CGTs #MLAs #LabTechnicians #HealthcareProfessionals #NationalMedicalLaboratoryWeek
On April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Of the 29 passengers, sixteen lost their lives and thirteen will all bear physical and emotional scars for life. On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so because Logan told his parents he was registering as an organ donor and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives. In honour of the Logan Boulet Effect, in support of organ donor awareness and registration across Canada. "The science of sedentary behavior is not settled. Definitive public health guidance cannot yet be provided. But for now, while awaiting a more robust database, it’s reasonable to offer this advice: Don’t skip on sleep. Engage in more physical activity, including exercise. Sit (and recline) less. And when at the desk or in the hammock about every half-hour get up for a few minutes and take a walking break."
Each year, 4,000 Canadians lose their lives due to poisoning and annual unintentional poisoning deaths have now surpassed transport-related deaths in Canada. With many potential poisons, such as household cleaners, medications and cannabis products in Canadian homes, it is important to know how to safely store them. Only 40 per cent of Canadian parents report knowing about local poison resources. Remember to keep your local poison centre phone number stored in your cellphone or in a visible location, such as on your fridge. #PoisonPreventionWeek
"There are many more ingredients in every pill you take than what is listed on the bottle label. These other ingredients, which are combined with the therapeutic one, are often sourced from around the world before landing in your medicine cabinet and are not always benign."
The FDA recommends that health care professionals limit prescribing NSAIDs (drugs like ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Ecotrin) or recommending over-the-counter NSAIDs to women between 20 to 30 weeks of pregnancy and avoid it altogether after 30 weeks if at all possible.
"Advance care planning allows people to make health care choices before they become ill, such as whether they would want to be on life support and who should make health care decisions for them if they can’t. The pandemic is now raising difficult new questions, as well, and for younger people. For example, if you were allowed only one visitor in the hospital, who should it be? And if you can’t care for yourself after you leave the hospital, where would you want to live?"
"Many of us have heard: Don’t go outside without a coat; you’ll catch a cold. That’s not exactly true. As with many things, the reality is more complicated. Here’s the distinction: Being cold isn’t why you get a cold. But it is true that cold weather makes it easier to get the cold or flu."
A person may not know that they have sleep apnea, but a sleeping partner or other household member may notice it. Anyone who experiences daytime sleepiness should see a doctor, who can help them find out the reason and the steps to take to solve it.
