The YYJ Craft Crawl - Saanich Peninsula is just 4 days away, which means it is time to release the official vendor list! We have 26 amazing vendors lined up fro...m the Elk lake area up to Swartz Bay! It might a smaller craft crawl, but that doesn't mean there isn't a boatload of talent. We have wine makers, quilters, soap makers, knitters, candle makers, wood works, writers and so much more. Maps are linked below: Zee Maps: https://j.mp/3mUjRiP Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit You can also find a printable version of the vendor list and the interactive maps on our website: www.yyjcraftcrawl.com

The Cowichan carder, last I was aware (2017), is in pieces in a machine shed in Comox. I considered restoring it but being 6'x32', it would need it's own building! My carder is only 6'x16' but is much older (1870).

Sadly but not surprisingly, Saanich Fair has officially been cancelled for 2020. The llamas and alpacas will miss seeing all of you!

Today’s experiment. Short staple corespun on a Mcdermott spinner. Interesting but needs tweaking.

Using up misc. bits to make corespun. I’m thinking of calling this one Unicorn belly-button lint.

"The old threads are unraveling, Get your needles ready. We are stitching a new quilt of Humanity. Bring your old t-shirts,... worn out jeans, scarves, antique gowns, aprons, old pockets of plenty who have held Earth's treasures, stones, feathers, leaves, love notes on paper. Each stitch A mindful meditation. Each piece of material A story. The more colour the better, so call in the Tribes. Threads of browns, whites, reds, oranges Women from all nations start stitching. Let's recycle the hate, the abuse, the fear, the judgment. Turn it over, wash it clean, ring it out to dry. It's a revolution of recycled wears. Threads of greens, blues, purples Colourful threads of peace, kindness, respect, compassion are being stitched from one continent to the next over forests, oceans, mountains. The work is hard Your fingers may bleed. But each cloth stitched together Brings together a community. A world, our future world Under one colourful quilt. The new quilt of humanity." Julia Myers Paiting 'Thread of Life' by Jakki Moore

Seventy Stitches To The Inch: Althea Crome's Tiny Micro Knitting. Althea Crome started knitting tiny objects to give herself a challenge after getting bored wit...h the usual knitter's fare of scarves and gloves. "Things kept getting smaller and smaller. I liked socks and gloves and baby booties, and little baby things. And before I knew it I was really off the deep end, going very small," Sitting with her project and magnifying glasses, Crome will sometimes knit for eight to ten hours at a stretch, between her job as a respiratory therapist and raising four children. Anthea Stainless uses handmade steel knitting needles for her miniature knitting. Images Courtesy: https://www.altheacrome.com

One major source of microplastics is the shedding of fibres during machine washing of synthetic textiles. Through the laundry wastewater streams these microfibr...es enter marine systems where they are ingested by aquatic organisms and enter the food chain or accumulate on the ocean floor. One strategy against the problem is to increase the use of natural fibres such as wool in apparel as well as interior textiles. Initial research suggests that wool readily biodegrades in water! Here you can find a quick overview of biodegradation in days of different textile fibres as well as how long some commonly used garments are estimated to take to biodegrade. #choosewisely #checkitswool

we are shearing at Parry Bay Sheep Farm tomorrow morning and welcome anyone interested in buying fleeces directly off the sheep. We have East Friesian/ Finn cr...osses, mostly. Please message through our Parry Bay Sheep Farm page for more details and directions to the farm. We have just posted some photos from today's shearing and some of those fleeces are still available, too. See more

For anyone who might still be questioning the motivation behind shearing regularly. Fibre animals have been bred to the point where this is no longer about the benefit to us, it is an obligation as a responsible, caring farmer.

We are a semi-worsted mill. Our spinner requires a minimum staple length of 3.5" and the sliver goes through a gilling machine (pin-drafter) before spinning.
