Interested in referring a class to be assessed for #pointework ? We LOVE it but also say- Hold that thought and check out our latest video first! It is filled with some juicy information that we find is important studios, teachers and parents are aware of before jumping into one of our pre-pointe programs. As health care professionals, we have certain standards that we need to see the dancer achieve before we can give them medical clearance for pointework. There are many milestones that are involved in a pre-pointe assessment that many people don’t realize can take some time to achieve. And unfortunately some of these things can’t be rushed. We can only progress the dancer so quickly. . . Haven’t mastered two foot rises in parallel yet? Well we won’t be able to progress to one foot work... . . Still struggling with balancing on one foot for 10seconds? How do you think they will do in a pointe shoe with a firm shank?! . . Struggling with pelvic placement and holding rotation in their plies and basic barre work? They won’t have the control for centre floor... . . Fatiguing with 10 rises on one foot at the barre? How do you think this lack of strength will help them get up on their pointe shoe box in centre floor? . . We pride ourselves on our #indepth Pre-pointe programs and the standards we hold for same. We see HOW many issues can come from not having these foundations BEFORE getting en pointe. Today mark’s Indepth’s COVID-VERSARY. 1yr ago today we put up a sign saying we were temporarily closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 outbreak. . . It has been interesting to see this week, what day completely shifted the lives of small business owners. It is a day that none of us will ever forget. Little did we know how much would change in months to come... and now 1yr.... .... . Shout out to all of you who had to pivot, shift, adapt, re-invent yourselves day in and day out- and perhaps continue to now- as things continue to unfold. There is light at the end of the tunnel. We have made it this far- we CAN and will keep going. We made it a year. We can do this. . . So is it a happy anniversary- not really? But I will say I am happy to have had this past year over with but grateful in a sense of the changes it pushed me to make. Indepth would truly not be where it is today if it wasn’t for covid. . . So as you reflect back on the past year, as exhausting as it might have been, was there a change for the GOOD that came about because of covid? Did it also push you to make changes in your life you wouldn’t have otherwise made? That’s what I think is worth celebrating. . . So bittersweet covid-versary to you all. Ahhh yes.... Square Peg Round Hole Syndrome. I know this well. This may be the one type of syndrome we don’t typically learn in physio school but tend to find out about it sooner than later just from living life... . So what do you do when you find yourself willing something to happen that just doesn’t seem to want to work out? What do you do when despite all of your energy, re-attempts, brainstorming, re-routes, still do not seem to yield the results you desire? . STOP... EVERYTHING AND JUST PRESS PAUSE. . Do not pass go. . Do not collect $200. . This my friends is the Universe saying, Dude, appreciate the effort but I’m really trying to make it obvious for you that you just need to wait. Trust Me. . I have been in this situation COUNTLESS of times (also currently in it). You know me- always have a project (or several) on the go. Always dreaming, always planning for the next thing. Well there have been many times where no matter how hard I freakin try, it’s just a serious case of square peg in round hole syndrome and I just need to leave it alone...for a bit... . Do not confuse this with giving up. This is just pressing pause. And you know what? There is usually good reason why something is not working out. Will you know WHY it’s not working out at the time? Likely not. But believe me, at some point down the road- maybe when it finally DOES work out- you will be grateful that it never ended up happening when you originally wanted it to. GETTIN HIPPY & SPLITTY with it this week on #thesoapbox ! . . Last week we looked at how to assess our own hip alignment in simple weight transfers. This week we take it one step forward (literally!) into a SPLIT SQUAT. Split squats are a GREAT pre-requisite for working up into a single leg squat. ONE leg stability is SO challenging so this is a great way to progress your squats gradually and ensure that you are transferring your weight properly along the way. I can’t tel...l you HOW MANY TIMES WE NEED TO RE-TRAIN PEOPLE’S SQUAT AND LUNGE TECHNIQUE!! Hips tipping, knees falling in, pelvic twisting, arches collapsing in.... SO many things can go wrong when there’s poor core & hip control! But SO preventable if you can assess your own hip alignment in these simple home exercises. . . You wouldn't believe just how many kids we see in clinic be it for foot and ankle pain or a pre-pointe assessment where we need to go back to square one and retrain RISES ON TWO FEET IN PARALLEL!! Seems so simple right? Well take a closer look and you might realize that your rises could even use some "tweaking"! Pick up any weird rise tracking... habits? You will need to get picky and perfect parallel rises on two feet first before even thinking about pointe work! It can be such a simple fix, yet so many kids come into the clinic with poor rise technique. CONDITIONING FOR DANCE TEACHERS!!! . . Dance Teachers are one of our favourite types of clients to work with!! Not only are they keen to develop their own technique but are so thirsty for tips and tricks they can apply in their own classes (they are also so much fun to work with!) .... . Miss Kristen is one of our amazing local Ballet Instructors who is also preparing for a Ballet Exam herself this year. She is demonstrating one of our favourite pilates mat exercises to improve side stability/ strength in #developpe a la seconde- a position we can all agree can be very challenging in standing not to grip the hip. We train the stability in side lying first and then start to transfer those skills to standing. We are also working on core stability, standing leg stability and deep turn out control with Miss Kristen! We have so much fun with her in clinic and love hearing that she is implementing the exercises in her classes!! We LOVE that! Thank you Miss Kristen! . . What a whirlwind. Two months ago I sat and took a similar picture in our old space in Canmore. To say that 2020 has been a rollercoaster is an understatement. Most people think that I opened in Calgary BECAUSE Canmore closed. Quite the contrary. I had to decide on this new space back at the beginning of the summer- thinking that Canmore would still be a thing. To this day I still can’t explain it, but something told me to just GO FOR IT. It didn’t make any sense... rea...lly, open another clinic and try to balance both a Canmore and Calgary location? Seemed crazy... but at the same time my GUT WAS TELLING ME GO FOR IT. . . If this year has taught me anything, it’s LISTEN TO YOUR GUT. Even if it doesn’t make logical sense. It’s the universe giving you a visceral punch in the right direction. And I am so grateful that I did... . . I sit here reflecting on how my life in just two months looks nothing like it did back in the summer. And you know what? I’m so good with it. So at peace with my decision and SO grateful for listening to my gut- no matter how crazy it seemed at the time. . . Do you have something that keeps nagging at you? Just a gut feeling that you need to change directions with your life? LISTEN TO IT. It’s the universe giving you a nudge. Ignore it? We all know the "Golden Rule"- Treat others as you would like to be treated... BUT Do you know the GOLDEN RULE when it comes to PAIN??! How should we treat pain? When do we honor it and back off vs. when do we push through even though we feel pain?? This is probably ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF EDUCATION I GIVE MY PATIENTS!! That is the million dollar question folks: What do I do when I feel pain? Because I can tell you the answer is NOT just stop and do nothing. Quite... the contrary... Is there a time and place when we need to listen to our bodies and honor the pain? Of course, but I can tell you this does not mean listen to every little whisper and complaint either! In fact if you go too long without moving because you are afraid of any pain at all it actually can lead to something worse... kinesiophobia- the fear of movement. (**not so great if you're in chronic pain and the treatment IS movement... then what?!) So how do we know when to push through and when to stop?? Better check out this week's SOAPBOX and learn the GOLDEN PAIN RULE by heart! It might just save you from the dreaded kinesiophobia and prevent you from going down the chronic pain pathway...
