Whoa...1983 wasn't that long ago. That was the Mission of the the Canadian Government in 1834, when they opened Residential Schools. Their mission was "to kill the Indian within the Child", so they can be "assimilated" into Colonial Society. Attempted Genocide. Most Canadians don't know about this dark stain on Canadian history, we were taught one side of the story...apparently the story Pierre Trudeau wanted to tell. While he was spewing his rhetoric, the "Indian" chi...ldren were still being tortured and mistreated in Residential Schools away from their families. The last Residential School finally closed in 1996, 13 years later.
