Wachiya. I was approached by Willis College a few weeks ago, when a previous employee of my Blue Skies Recovery Treatment and Wellness Centre recommended me for... a position. This program is funded and gives Indigenous adults in the Ottawa area an opportunity to develop some essential skills needed to prepare them for post-secondary education and/or to enter an employment area of interest discovered during the program. The program provides students with a space to learn about and share Indigenous ways of knowing in an environment that fosters Indigenous worldview, creativity, language, self-reflection and experiential learning. The course is intended to broaden student awareness of Indigenous realities in Canada, including contemporary issues and Indigenous solution-building. It allows for the learning and sharing of ways to incorporate traditional knowledge into everyday life and to decolonize the spaces we live in. Each class begins with a smudge, an opening circle and closes with a sharing circle. My kind of learning environment. As someone who has already dedicated her life to creating these spaces, and elevating platforms for Indigenous artists, elders and traditional healers to be valued and given honorariums/job positions/careers, I am both honoured and excited to take this on. Please share and circulate. Gitchi-Miigwech.
