Today we visited Whitesand First Nation where we spent the day with the powerful team of health staff and community members growing their own food.. This is Whitesands 4th year gardening and each year the commitment, passion and number of gardens grow. Since the beginning of this project Roots to Harvest has supported us and Whitesand and today we got together and talked about their experiences over the last 4 years and what is in the future (hint hint strawberry patch)... today is the kinda of day where we fully understand why we do this work... our hearts amd bellies are full... chi Miigwech Whitesand we can't wait to come back...

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit our region in March the Indigenous Food Circle, in collaboration with the Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre’s Good Food Box program quickly recognized that our partner First Nations in the region were facing exacerbated rates of vulnerability while trying to access fresh affordable foods. Existing supply chain shortages, backlogs and an already fragmented transportation and distribution system left communities with minimal emergency options.... With sponsorship and coordination from the Good Food Box; the relationships of the Indigenous Food Circle and the muscle of First Nation members and staff we successfully packed and delivered 1188 good food boxes to First Nation families. This work could not have been possible without the funding support of the @Thunder Bay Community Foundation and United Way Thunder Bay through their Covid-19 Community Response Fund, The Sprott Foundation and @communityfoodcentrescanada through their #GoodFoodAccessFund. Chi Miigwech to our First Nation partner communities, your resiliency and strength empowers us to do better building our regional food system and supporting your sovereignty. #biigtigongnishnaabeg #pawgwasheeng #redrockindianband #ginoogaming #longlake58 #animbiigoozaagiigananishinaabek #netmizaaggamignishnaabeg #whitesand #kiashkezaaginganishinaabek See more
