We join our colleagues at Indigenous Music in expressing our are sadness to hear of the passing of Curtis Shingoose Jonnie. He was a leader in the Indigenous music scene in Manitoba early on. He will be remembered as helping open doors for a broader Indigenous music scene in Canada. He will be greatly missed.

It is with immense pleasure the Manito Ahbee Festival and the Indigenous Music Awards send our heartfelt congratulations to Lisa Meeches on her appointment to t...he Order of Canada. As the executive director of the festival, Lisa has led the festival with care and love over the past 16 years. "Lisa has been the Heart and Spirit of the Manito Ahbee Festival. Lisa has brought to the forefront the most positive elements of Indigenous Culture, History and traditions. She has always acknowledged her elders and ancestors and helped strengthen our communities and the connections to people of all nations," says David Dandeneau, the chair of the board of directors for the Manito Ahbee Festival. She is a leader in the Canadian film and television industry and has consistently made space for more Indigenous people to walk through the doors she has opened. Lisa has a calm respect for her Elders and takes guidance from her Anishinaabe teachings in all that she does. From your Manito Ahbee family Lisa, congratulations on this momentous occasion!

The Manito Ahbee Festival and Indigenous Music Awards family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Manuel Sousa. Manny was a big supporter of the Manito Ahbee Festival and the Indigenous Music Awards. He was a fixture on the red carpet and made many friends at the festival. His photography truly captured the spirit of the powwow and the awards. We will miss him dearly. "He proved to the world Indigenous people loved and valued life, through his pictures. He captured our smiles and kindness and the very best of our beautiful Indigenous Elders, children and powwow circles. He is a true warrior who believed all people are equal and he will always be remembered as an ally." - Lisa Meeches Rest in Power brother.
