Happy International Womxn’s Day to all the strong, creative, beautiful, kind, smart, resilient womxn in this world In the design industry, only 0.1% of creative agencies are founded by women and non-binary people, and the numbers are even smaller for women/non-binary BIPOC @ladieswinedesign. While 61% of the design industry identifies as female, Women hold just 11% of leadership positions in the design industry and make 80 cents on the dollar compared to their ...male counterparts @aigaeyeondesign 2019 Census. It’s so clear that our industry still has a long way to go in terms of equality. All of the faculty at my college were male. I was the only female staff at my first design job. I’ve been in meeting with clients who would ask my male counterparts questions even if I was leading the project. Gender bias is still very alive and real today. But I’ve also worked with absolutely inspiring women who have achieved so many amazing this. Women who are giving, supportive, innovative, barrier-breaking. I know how hard it can be. But also how amazing it is. Someday I hope I can create some sort of educational or support course/group/etc. (my wheels are still turning on how I want this to look). But for now I’d like to offer free mentorship sessions to a few new designers starting out in the world of freelance. A few weeks ago I received the sweetest inquiry. I literally teared up reading it. I felt so seen. I truly put my heart into my work and value fostering genuine relationships with my clients. And to know that comes through means everything to me. I know my work won’t be for everyone. And that’s okay.
