Choosing a product development (PD) agency to help bring your product to market is a high stakes decision that should be made with the utmost care. The bottom line is who you decide to work with will massively influence the outcome in your journey to bring a product to market. Something we hear often from prospects that are shopping for a product development partner is how each PD agency has their own process, expertise and approach to working with customers and developing pr...oducts which makes their decision on who to work with more difficult. In the interest of making the decision a little less stressful for those looking for product development help, we’ve put together 21 questions you can ask each agency you meet with, to help you evaluate them across a common set of criteria. For start-ups developing hardware and IoT products the challenges they face are very different from start-ups developing pure software products. Longer development cycles, complex manufacturing processes, as well as heavy costs associated with fixing design and manufacturing errors are all difficult parts of the hardware development journey. These are just a few examples why mentorship and professional guidance from folks who have been through the process can often be a g...ame changer. We came across this article by StartupBlink which offers some really great guidance for hardware and IoT startups looking to get started on solid footing. https://inertiaengineering.com/bookmarked-interesting-find/ #manufacturing #hardware #design #iot #innovation #startups #engineering #bestpractices

2020 was a year of never-ending challenges. By all measures, 2021 will offer up more of the same. One silver lining from this time in our history is seeing how necessity can push us to collectively speed up our rate of innovation. This has been proven by how quickly we've developed vaccines. However, once we get to the other side of the pandemic (whatever shape that may take), there are other long standing issues, desperately in need of ongoing and accelerated innovation. O...verpopulation, resource scarcity and climate change are amongst the greatest challenges of our time. With a predicted global population of 9.8 billion by 2050, we’re in a rush to figure out how to feed a much larger population. As a result, the agricultural sector is another example where urgent need is accelerating the rate of innovation. One of many ag-tech innovation stories unfolding in Canada is that of Nexus Robotics who, in collaboration with our team at Inertia, are working on an autonomous weed picking robot that uses cameras and machine learning to distinguish between weeds and crops. This kind of advancement in agricultural automation has the potential to profoundly improve labor efficiency while decreasing our use of harmful herbicides. To read more about why our planet demands innovation in agriculture, check out this article by Tina Wung for RocketSpace. https://inertiaengineering.com/bookmarked-interesting-find/

We’ve all been on the receiving end of some pretty awful customer experiences in our lifetime. These experiences can often stem from employees who are working in negatively charged environments that suck the energy out of them leaving them to pass along their frustrations to you, the unwitting customer. Which brings us to this week’s post about the importance of championing a supportive, positive, inclusive culture for your team. A thoughtfully fostered culture equals happy... employees, which equals happy customers, which equals better business for everyone. This was the mantra championed by former Zappos.com CEO, Tony Hsieh, who sadly passed away late last month. Tony’s legacy of reinventing customer service started with taking great care of his employees. It’s an approach that we share at Inertia and one that continues to translate into us being able to provide exceptional experiences to our customers. If you’re looking to build company culture that inspires your team to do better, here is an article we’d like to share by Ed Nathanson for the LinkedIn Talent Blog that includes 7 steps every small business should take. https://inertiaengineering.com/bookmarked-interesting-find/ #companyculturematters #companyculture #happyemployees #happycustomers #productdevelopment #innovation

It's common knowledge that in the world of product design & development, speed-to-market matters, a lot. One challenge we face as product development service partners is educating prospective customers not on the advantages of going fast (the reasons are quite obvious), but rather on the lost opportunities of going slow - by saving money using inexperienced designers and engineers or overloading existing staff. To help illustrate this we’d like to share a quick payback anal...ysis graph to compare 2 different approaches (and budgets) to bringing a product to market. For more on the true cost of going slow, head over to our blog. https://inertiaengineering.com/the-true-cost-of-going-slow
