New educational tool developed to teach core concepts of pain research into Macquarie Universitys physical therapy program. "Major deficiencies in pain educati...on for health professionals have been increasingly recognised. In the United States, the National Institutes of Health Pain Consortium identified significant gaps in pain content across 6 interprofessional pre-licensure health science education programs.7 In a landmark report, the U.S. Institute of Medicine (2012) stated that a major impediment to adequate pain relief was patients limited access to clinicians who are knowledgeable about pain, which was related to the prevalence of outmoded or unscientific knowledge and attitudes about pain" "Two educational tools were developed to embed core concepts and a clinical model into the students education, and applied across conditions and throughout the lifespan. These were developed in consultation with leading pain education specialists and clinicians at the Pain Management Research Institute at the Royal North Shore Hospital (Sydney) as well as an experienced Educational Designer and Developer at Macquarie University. The 2 tools are: (1) The Six Core Concepts of Pain (Fig. 3); and (2) The Clinical Model of Pain (Fig. 4). Students are introduced to these early in the DPT program, and they inform future learning at later stages of the curriculum." Ref.: Husha et al. 2018

To all my patients: Due to the ever changing COVID-19 state in Alberta, our Associations across the province have made the very tough decision to ask all Massage Therapy practices to shut down immediately. This was a very hard decision to make but one that had to be made. So, effective immediately, Infants to Athletes Massage Therapy will be closed until March 31, 2020. At that point we will reassess the situation and hopefully re-open at that time, more than likely on a redu...ced 2-3day/week schedule. I am working on some ideas to help you through this time, such as online injury and pain management consulting, so stay tuned for that. My email and phone are always free to call if you have questions or need some advice on managing your pain or discomfort through this time. Stay healthy everyone! via @rehabscience One of the issues I get the most questions on is low back pain, especially disc herniations. While there is a lot that goes ...into this question, two things I usually mention are that disc herniations are common in much of the asymptomatic population and that they can heal with time and conservative treatment. - The following is a case report that documents the resolution of a lumbar herniation without surgery and demonstrates that pain can return when the apparent disc injury is no longer present. Pain is complex! - The MRIs shown here are from a 32 year old male who presented to the hospital with severe back pain in two different occasions. On October 2012, the patient did not have any neurological deficits, so physical therapy and a short course of oral steroids were ordered and his pain resolved. - In October 2013, another MRI was ordered when the same patient once again entered the hospital with severe back pain. This time around, his disc herniation was no longer visible. - What does this teach us . 1Pain does not necessarily indicate tissue damage. In both situations documented above, the patient had low back pain. At the time of the first episode, a potential tissue insult could be identified. This was not true at the time of the second episode of back pain. . 2Disc herniations can resolve with conservative care and time. The details of this individuals rehab were not given, but it is important to know that relatively simple programs that include movements like walking, general low back mobility drills and low load resistance training exercises help the majority of people. A healthy dose of patience (up to 4-6 months) is important too. Zhong M, et al. Incidence of Spontaneous Resorption of Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Meta-Analysis. Pain Physician J. 2017. .
