The best way to protect yourself and your organization against cybercrime is to act like a fact-checker and question everything you read, see and hear before sharing. Follow these steps to spot cybersecurity disinformation! Always be skeptical. Is this information presenting facts, or is it trying to cause a strong emotional reaction? Check the website address. If you look closely, will you see that realsite.com is really realsitte.com?... Check who owns the site: Does it seem like a real individual or organization owns the website? You can use a WHOIS tool on the Internet, like lookup.icann.org, to check who a web address is registered to and if that site owner information seems suspicious. Read past the headline or tagline. Does the headline relate to the body, or is it written just to catch your attention and get you to click or forward? Validate the source of the information. Is it usually reliable? Can you verify that it is legitimate? Check the images. What is the source of the image and has it been altered? Check the facts. Are all the facts accurate, or is this disinformation with some legitimate facts sprinkled in to make it appear legitimate? Check the comments. What kind of comments are others making? Do they think this content is misleading or invented? Beware of bots that might be populating the comments with agreements and likes to boost its popularity. Check the dates and author. Is this truly new information or is it recycled disinformation made to look new? Is there an author or is this anonymous? If there is an author, are they credible? Check the quotes.
