________________________________ To (De)seed or Not to.. (De)seed ________________________________... I often find myself using the Persian " " in the absence of English certainty. Because before now, pomegranate was ed in Russian. And I never ed in my English life. And after careful thought, it seemed that I (embarrassingly) had no idea which verb to use--but with good reason! A quick online search showed that both seed and deseed are used in the seed-extraction context. And dictionaries list both as acceptable. And after discussion with my non-immigrant brother-in-law, it was established that perhaps "prepare" or "remove seeds from" or "extract" are better alternatives because pomegranate is kind of an exception, isn't it. The negative connotations of (de)seeding a tomato, for example, clouded our judgment. So there it is. I will continue to until my audience forces me to seed.. or deseed.. or both. . . . . #English #

***Fun Fact*** The ten untranslatable (into English) words featured by The Guardian's "Upside" series include one in Persian and one in Russian: Ta'arof (): Referring to the art of etiquette ubiquitous in everyday Iranian life. Not all Taa'rofs are insincere; some are, some aren't. You’d Ta'arof even if you badly want something, saying you don't want it; you'd Ta'arof if you really hate something, pretending you want it. ... Toska (тоска): Spiritual anguish, a deep pining, perhaps the product of nostalgia or love-sickness, toska is depression plus longing, an unbearable feeling that you need to escape but lack the hope or energy to do so. -------------------------------------- Incidentally, a personal observation: The Persian aafiyat bashe ( ), when said to somebody who's just taken a shower, exists in the Russian s legkim parom (с лгким паром)--literally meaning "with light steam." #Russian #Persian #Translation # #Русский https://tinyurl.com/y9ab22eb
