Over the years we have had some audience members question the words we have used in our plays. These are directly from the script. Many scripts, occasionally... have a swear word or another colourful phrase that can be interpreted as inappropriate by some. We try our best for our dinner theatres not to have any offensive words, but when we do we put a warning on our posters and in the description of the play. When asked why we don't simply take the words out, there are a couple of answers to that. We like to keep the integrity of the play and hence all the words that the playwright has originally written into the play. Secondly, to change the words, we need the permission of the playwright and often times, requires money to change that, something most theatre companies do not have a lot of, and finally, we do not always find the same words offensive as others do. It will be a great day when we can start putting on live theater again!
Sometimes I wonder if the Ol’Moose ......
We have established that actors and theatre are a superstitious lot by talking about breaking a leg, the ghost light, ghosts and the Scottish Play. Today's sup...erstition comes from the phrase, Bad Dress, Good Opening Wishful thinking or not, many stage actors swear that a bad dress rehearsal portends a great opening night. This superstition’s origins are unclear, maybe a producer or director trying to boost a cast’s morale, but it’s a comforting concept when the final dress goes south. Possibly, this is an example of sour grapes. However, it has a tendency to be true in that cast and crew are scared straight by a bad dress rehearsal and therefore fix their mistakes by opening night. As well, you, the audience help provide a good opening night by providing energy and then adrenaline into the actors to give them a boost after months of rehearsals. See more
