But - did you know that without adequate sleep any weight-loss you achieve will likely be at least 50% lean mass (the stuff that actually keeps your metabolism revving) thus resulting in a slower metabolism and a greater likelihood of hitting a plateau in your progress? This is just one of the many reasons why our Beyond Nutrition Coaches always consider creating and maintaining quality sleep patterns to be an essential part of their coaching process.

Not everyone has a weight-loss goal. What about those who want to GAIN weight? Well, for those folks, many of the basic rules still apply: to remain healthy during a weight-gain journey there should still be an emphasis on minimally processed whole foods, and getting lots of protein, colourful veggies, and enough carbs and healthy fats to keep you energized through your day! The biggest difference in terms of behaviour is not actually wh...at to eat, but rather how to eat: 1. Eat quickly. You’re trying to get as many QUALITY nutrients in your body as you can before you feel full. 2. Eat to 120% full. That’s probably one more portion than you would naturally want to eat. Most meals should feel like you just indulged on Thanksgiving. 3. Utilize liquid calories where appropriate Not trying to gain weight? 1. Eat Slowly 2. As evident from our recent survey, results overwhelmingly indicate that regular physical activity - whether that be structured cardio such as running or cycling, resistance training such as a weight-lifting program, or even just regular walking - decreases the incidence of mental health episodes commonly associated with depression and/or anxiety. Further research has indicated that these positive effects can be amplified when combined with the great outdoors. Researchers look...ing at the long-standing Japanese tradition of Shinrin-Yoku - roughly translated as forest bathing - posited that the added benefits of exercising in nature come from inhaling beneficial bacteria, essential oils, and negatively charged ions which exist in nature and, in turn, interact with our own gut bacteria. This leads to improved gut health, which subsequently helps to improve both physical and mental health. This is just one of the many reasons that our team at Innovative Fitness have long been advocates for getting out and being physically active in nature. Whether that be going for a hike, kayak, mountain bike ride, skiing, or just completing a personal training session outdoors, we’ve consciously made every effort to keep our clients active in AND outside of the studio. These adventures also help build a strong community of like-minded people!
