Lockdowns might have done a lot to prevent Covid-19, but they have done a number on mental health. Anxiety and depression have both spiked and it is pretty easy to see. Not just in adults, but kids as well. Things that used to be done without a second though now trigger those feelings of anxiety and stress. Taking care of yourself is more then just washing your hands and staying home when you are sick. It's diet, it's staying physically active and it's having a sense of be...longing. Even in the short few weeks since we've been back it is amazing to see how much change some people go through simply by being back on the mat, with people, being active. Anxiety might have spiked, but it will pass. The most important thing you do is what you do next, because if you don't do it you're done. Time to get back to being active and getting healthy in all ways, physically & mentally.

Definitely a good time to get back into gyms and sports. This isn't a covid thing, it's pretty much across the board. Being in good physical shape should be one of those "fundamentals" https://winnipegsun.com//giesbrecht-covid-19-is-really-an-

So today’s the new public health orders where released, and it is a very clear example of what happens when the people that write the orders have no Knowledge of the thing they are putting orders in place for. Probably the most risky thing we could do in a martial arts environment is have a single failure point that puts everyone within 2 steps of each other. So if I, as an instructor where in close contact with everyone on a weekly basis. If you spend 30-60 mins wrestling ...with a person, if someone is sick both are gonna be sick. 14-day incubation period and this means bad news for everyone. However, under the new public health orders this is not only allowed, it is the ONLY thing allowed for martial arts schools. I can’t have 3 people in here hitting bags 10 ft away from each other. I can’t have people bring their own designated partners and do all their work with that one person. If I have 5 members in the studio, I would need 5 staff to keep the 1-to-1 ratio. Martial arts, dance, gymnastics and more where excluded from the 25% capacity rules, and only allowed to operate with 1-to-1 instruction. So of the many ways that we could do things relatively safe, we are allowed none of them. The only option we are allowed is probably the one with the most risk of creating a major outbreak. It is illegal for us to operate by grouping people to only have close contact with no one, or a couple people. But perfectly legal for me to wrestle with 30+ different people on a weekly basis. 25% capacity for any business is not sustainable. Resauraunts have to make a decision on whether they think they will lose more or less money by opening. Gyms can’t sustain at 25% capacity. And the rules for indoor organized activities are just absurd. We hope to be back to training soon, and look forward to seeing people on the mats again, but we need the province to start listening to the businesses that they are restricting to get rules that provide safety and are practical.

Up until Monday Martial Arts Studios got grouped with Fitness centres in terms of restrictions. However as of Monday that changed and the order to shut down all martial arts studios came out. Not just from doing high risk activity, but to shut down entirely. So a fitness kickboxing class or a bootcamp style workout while allowed in a building classified as a fitness centre is allowed, it is not allowed in a martial arts studio. Fitness and health are things we need to focus... on right now. Martial arts promotes cardio-vascular health, relieves stress and keeps people healthy. We can do things safely, we can have a positive effect on the general health of our communities and we need to stand together on this. https://www.change.org/p/martial-arts-schools-make-marti/w

Update on Classes After a week of trying to get answers from the Province on whether we could do anything with our space (no contact fitness classes, private classes, etc.) and getting no answers just redirected the new orders seem pretty clear, no one can do anything in person right now. So it's back to online classes for us.... With everything shut down and socializing banned completely excercise and fitness are more important then ever to get through all this. Physical and mental health are going to both be at risk as we go back to being isolated and stuck at home. But this time around I want to try and make it a little better experience. We have a whole bunch of equipment here that can't be used here. So for everyone that wants to participate in online classes I'd like to get some equipment involved by letting you check out gear for the time we are closed (just bring it back when we return to in person training) especially with fitness equipment very difficult to find right now, if you are lucky you might get a pair of rusty weight plates for only a little over normal retail price... So to start for kids classes we'd like to offer a medicine ball and a target / shield to be checked out for home training. The focus for the kids classes will be more kickboxing, fitness and some solo grappling drills to start, if there is enough interests we will add some parent / child grappling classes as well. For adults / teens in the fitness / kickboxing classes we'd like everyone to have a dumbell or a kettlebell. If you have someone to train with in the house we can also do a pair of Thai pads, or if you have space one of the standing bags. We also have the grappling dummies here as well, if there is enough interest in a Jiu-jitsu with dummies class we can lend out those guys as well. All equipment is limited to what I have and will need to be returned as soon as we are able to get going again. So let me know ASAP what you'd like. Online classes will start up Thursday evening, we will run Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday. Cost is going to be $25 / month per person or $40 / month for the whole family. If you are on a pre-paid membership we can just balance out the extension at the end. Platform we use for online classes is Zoom, it's fairly simple to use if you haven't tried it out. So please let me know ASAP what equipment you want to borrow, it can be picked up as early as this evening. Hopefully the governments plan works and we can get back on the mat soon, until then we will keep going online.
