Twenty years ago on June 1, 1999 Norfolk Southern absorbed a large portion of Conrail, increasing NS’ size by half and returning competitive rail service to... the Northeast for the first time since the 1970s. Norfolk Southern’s interest in the acquisition dated to the 1980s. Conrail’s chairman, Stanley Crane, and members of Congress opposed an early NS offer, asserting that Conrail was better off as an independent railroad. In 1987, in the largest initial public stock offering in the nation’s history to date, the government sold ownership interest in Conrail, returning it to the private sector as a for-profit corporation. NS approached negotiations again in 1996. CSX and Norfolk Southern agreed to acquire #Conrail through a joint stock purchase in 1997. The Surface Transportation Board approved the acquisition in June 1998 and operations were split a year later on June 1, 1999. David Goode, NS chairman, president and CEO at the time, told employees: We share the vision of building nothing less than the best transportation system in the world.
