Thank you to the city of Toronto for the new bike lanes. As a driver, it requires more patience. But there is a distinct separation from cyclists. As a physiotherapist that treats the accidents, I never thought I would feel safe driving down Bloor Street. Biked to the office today! Motion is lotion for our joints. My hips thank me. I encourage people to continue to take advantage of quiet streets, bike lanes, park trails as we enter fall. Any movement is good movement. Best. Jenn and the InsideOut team.

We have received another wonderful client testimonial from one of our regular virtual class participants. These classes have been well received and we are excited to continue to offer them. With two therapists and small groups, we are able to provided tailored exercise classes that meet your individual needs and goals. If you have had any reservations regarding your participation in a virtual class setting, we encourage you to read the following testimonial: - "During the las...t couple of months, Ive been doing private online sessions and group exercises similar to the GLAD program. While that was a change from visiting the studio, Ive found the results equally beneficial. I receive the same personalized feedback from our experienced practitioners. - With the GLAD program, a teacher and a practitioner are involved during the class. The practitioner shows how to do the movements while the teacher analyses each student and offers immediate corrections when necessary. - I dont have the same props as the studio but I can easily find alternatives at home, for instance a knapsack/grocery bag filled up with the proper weight replaces missing free weights. The teacher also offers alternate pauses that are effective if a specific prop is missing or if the exercise is too challenging. - Zoom is a user friendly application that allows me to get ready only a few minutes before the start of the live sessions. The online interactions encourage me to maintain an exercise routine that is critical to counteract my arthritis limitations. - I would recommend anyone to remain regular in doing physio either through a Zoom session or at the studio. Consistent exercise with experienced practitioners is more important than the physical location when it comes to taking care of our body." - For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or by phone at 416-925-0050. We feel it is our responsibility to follow the advice of the federal and provincial governments, as well as the Ontario Physiotherapy Association in promoting social distancing for the safety of everyone. We have had desperate inquiries from new patients unable to receive help elsewhere, and have heard the concern...s of our current patients and we want you to know that we are still here for you and will support you to the best of our ability. "Physical activity is a core treatment for osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis has been unhelpfully referred to as wear and tear, with descriptions such as bone on bone, leading to people fearing that physical activity will make it worse. It can instead be described as a flare and repair process. The pain from osteoarthritis is multifactorial, mainly from synovial inflammation trying to repair a joint, but also from capsule, muscle, ligament stiffness, and bony pain. Explain... that physical activity improves muscle control and tone, which support the joint while it heals. Physical activity also improves range of movement and stiffness, improving function and optimising recovery". https://www.bmj.com/content/366/bmj.l5230 Academic Reference: Haseler, C., Crooke, R., & Haseler, T. The Arthritis Society began as a National initiative to help alleviate the hardships of those living with arthritis. They advocate for the adoption of evidence-based treatments and invest in research that progresses the care of those living with arthritis in our society. Their website can be used as a useful resource for those living with this condition, which is said to be upwards of 1 in 5 Canadians. - Like many other arthritis foundations, they promote the adoption of regu...lar exercise programs to aid in peoples arthritic symptoms. They encourage exercise protocols that help people improve their ability to perform functional tasks. - The GLA:D Canada Program aims to educate people about their arthritic conditions, while providing them with self-management strategies and working consistently on improving functional movement patterns through a specific protocol of lower-body and core exercises. - The program has been shown to reduce pain reports in those with arthritis and improve their ability to perform day to day tasks, like sitting down and standing up. - Insideout is proud to offer this program, and, consistent with results from GLA:D related literature, have seen dramatic improvements with our clients from the beginning to end of this 6-week course. - If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the program, please feel free to call us at 416-925-0050. - See here for a link to the Arthritis Societys website: https://arthritis.ca See more

Resistance training doesnt have to be done at vigorous intensities to illicit positive health benefits. - For most people, even body weight exercises can make a profound difference to ones health. - This is not to discredit the benefits that can be incurred from training with external loads, such as training with weights or machines.... - Both are great and are highly dependent on peoples individual goals and limitations. - The most important things are to keep moving, stay consistent, and have fun with it! - Academic Citation: Mcleod, J. Cardiovascular related diseases are among the second leading causes of all deaths in Canada. . Most people associate Aerobic Exercise Training (AET) as being the best or only way to improve cardiovascular health. . There is an emerging body of research that suggests that Resistance Exercise Training (RET) as a stand alone intervention, or used in conjunction with AET, can be just as effective or better than AET alone at reducing ones Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk.... . The article referenced below by Mcleod et al., (2019), highlights many of the benefits that regular RET can have on a multitude of chronic diseases. . References: 1. Mcleod, J.
