Have someone in your life who is difficult to buy gifts for? Consider giving the gift of a donation to Insight Counselling and Therapy Centre this holiday season! Any amount can assist individuals in the community to get the mental health help they need but may not be able to access at full cost. Instead of an object they will never use, a loved one can know that this gift helped to support those in need.

Having trouble being assertive with your needs? Try an assertiveness script to help you ask for what you need in your relationships. It looks like this: I think: Tell the person your facts and understanding of what is going on in the situation. You are not making a judgment or assumption about the other person, this is not an attack. Example: "I think we haven't been spending a lot of time together lately, I only saw you yesterday and on Tuesday the week before" I feel: This ...is more likely to be used with a friend or family member rather than a clerk at a store. You are to give a brief description of the emotions triggered by the situation. Use "I" statements that are not accusatory. Example: "I feel rejected and lonely" I want: Ask for a behavioural change not a change in attitude. You can't expect someone to change their beliefs because you don't like them, but you can ask them to change what they do and how they behave if it is hurting you. Ask for only one change at a time and something that can change now. Be very specific and concrete. Example: "I would like us to try to spend three nights per week together" Self care solution: This step is optional. You are not threatening the person but giving them encouragement. You are telling them what you'll do to take care of yourself if they don't comply with your request. This shows you are not helpless and can solve the problem and it is not intended to punish them. Example: "If you can't spend that much time with me I will make plans with my friends on those evenings so that I am not feeling so lonely." Put it all together and it looks like this! "I think we haven't been spending a lot of time together lately, I only saw you yesterday and on Tuesday the week before. I feel rejected and lonely. I would like us to try and spend three nights per week together. If you can't spend that much time with me I will make plans with my friends on those evenings so that I am not feeling so lonely" Give it a try and see what you think!
