My first demo video! I offer some suggestions for omitting the lowering from plank in sun salutations.

I’ve been practising more Vinyasa Flow yoga Classes this month and find the transition from Down Dog to Lunge difficult with my foot making it maybe halfway. This can be because of tight shoulders or hips or the fact that your legs are way longer than your arms. Grabbing the foot and assisting it forward is an option but I find it a bit clunky and slow if I’m keeping up with a faster paced class. Dropping to the opposite knee and then bringing the foot forward is an option ...as well. I really like Dianne Bondy’s demo of using blocks to transition. I’ve been keeping my blocks just in front of my hands on my mat to access easily for the step through. Blocks can be at any height but do keep in mind they may be a bit more unstable at the highest level. Of course there is always the option to do what works best for you even if that means slowing down the Vinyasa (Sun Salutation) down. This is always acceptable whether you are doing an online class or when you are in a studio. It is your practice, the cues are just guidelines. See more

Posted @withregram @connectedyogatherapy I am a big fan of gratitude but I also recognize that it has come from a place of privilege. I am grateful for so much but I don’t let that practice blind me to what needs to change in this world. I can be grateful that I have a roof over my head and believe that everyone should have a roof over their head. ... I also have gratitude that I don’t have to live in fear that I will be racially profiled but I am in no place to tell someone to practice gratitude about their experience living in their skin. I also can’t feel content with my gratitude knowing others don’t enjoy the same privileges. Practices like gratitude can help you to see the world differently but they can also create blinders for your own suffering and the suffering of others. So rather than serving up spiritual platitudes maybe we should be asking ourselves and our students questions like: How can we practice contentment without being complacent? How can we be grateful for what we have and work to provide with the same? What is enough? It’s a lot more work to sit with these questions but the practice has a greater potential to have more depth and a much broader reach. #realyogatherapy #yogatherapy #spiritualpractice #gratitude #yqr #yoga #notalifecoach #yogateachers See more

Maybe this years resolution is to accept where we are right now Of course there’s nothing wrong with wanting to grow and improve different aspects of yourself. Start by accepting where you are in the present moment then see what naturally comes about when you don’t force changes to life. #stopdietculture ... #bodypositivity See more

Well said Body Acceptance doesn’t mean complacency, it means accepting where it’s at right now, not where it was and not where it might be. Posted @withregram @connected_yoga_therapy This can be a hard one. I know it has been for me. My body has had its challenges through the years but I wouldn’t change anything. It is strong and resilient and has carried me through to where I am now. This doesn’t mean that I don’t do things to to create good or even better hea...lth in my body. It means accepting my body as it is and being happy living in it. Accepting it as it is means working with my body rather than against it. It means finding joy whenever you can. It means celebrating what your body can do. Finding contentment only when things are perfect is a practice in futility. #findingjoy #yogatherapy #realyogatherapy #realyogabody #realyoga #accessibleyoga #whatisperfect #yoga #yogaforallbodies #yogaforeveryone #resilient #strongwomen #spoonies #yogainspiration

Corpse Pose: Shavasana by Irene McKinney You’ve put yourself through everything You could think of, deliberately,... Though at the time it just seemed to happen. You’ve pitched and twisted, tripped, And grimaced. You’ve run after, And been pursued. You’ve been ugly And frightened and murderous and dull. Now you lie on your back with your palms Turned up and say: I give it up. Whatever falls out of my hands Falls out of my hands. My eyelids Slip down and my mouth falls open. Whoever cares can go on Caring, someone will step into place And take it over, I do not care. Finally, my back is lying exactly on the ground, with no kinks. The loops are all unwound.

Great article by one of my absolute favourite teachers @diannebondyyogaofficial for her accessible yoga and social justice content and education. Posted @withregram @jivanaheyman Recently, I’ve seen some confusion about the connection between yoga, race, and social justice. I’m writing a blog about it, but in the meantime I recommend you read this great article called Yoga, Race and Culture, by Dianne Bondy @diannebondyyogaofficial on @yoga_international , where she sp...ells it out very clearly: When people speak up about their feelings of being excluded and marginalized by the dominant yoga culture, why do so many people in the community become so defensive? Why don’t we allow the marginalized to truly express themselves, and why aren’t their experiences encouraging the rest of the community to change their behaviors? The answer to all of these questions is the same: fragility. It is hard to look at yourself critically, and sometimes sharing power feels like losing power and the knee jerk reaction is to push back! But that is not the yogi way. We are missing a huge piece of what the yoga practice is intended to be. The yoga community, and more detrimentally the yoga industry as a whole, is missing the pinnacle niyamasvadhyaya, or self-study. Collectively, we are not practicing or celebrating the act of self-reflection and compassion that is self-study. Too many of us fail to acknowledge our biases, privileges, and limiting beliefs. We are terrified that admitting our bias and limiting makes us bad people, instead acknowledging that these beliefs have to be structurally taught and enforced. We do not manage to critically analyze the messages we are seeing and hearing as we navigate through the world. Thus, we are in no way offended as we continue to be bombarded with homogeneous images of yoga and the world as a whole. In fact, most of the time, it doesn’t even register in our consciousness how debilitating and detrimental these images are! https://yogainternational.com/artic//yoga-race-and-culture
