The Music Industry has thrived in Black Artistry from the very beginning. It would only make sense to have Black Music Executives at the forefront- yet there is a giant discrepancy. Advance Music Canada is changing this in Canada. The Canadian Black Music Collective is a community working to create recommendations to overturn systemic oppression for Black individuals in our industry. Familiarize yourself with their name, help promote job postings to the greater community of... people, and give everyone a seat at the table. < advancemusic.org > Take a moment to explore some of Canada’s Black Owned Indie Labels and check out, the Complex Article, "6 Black-Owned Canadian Indie Labels (and Why There Are So Few): http://bit.ly/3qv7kVv + Honourable Mention to: Heart Lake Records recently founded by Witch Prophet

Patience is necessary when sync opportunities arise. There are many players behind the scenes who dictate schedules, approvals, paperwork, and payment. Music supervisors are often not in control of timelines. Therefore, we vow to communicate each milestone of the project along the way. Good things come to those who wait!

#BlackHistoryMonth is a time to reflect on Black civil rights, culture, but also art. instinct has had the opportunity to work with numerous Canadian Black creators and talents such as Floyd Kane, Amos, Alfons, and Robert Adetuyi, Stella Meghie, Director X and Charles Officer. These brilliant filmmakers regularly celebrate Black culture, history and innovation, and encourage audiences to critique the systems of oppression around them. Their body of work represents some of th...e greatest storytelling our country has to offer. Black art and Black stories should be celebrated every month. February marks the start of Black History Month. This is a time for education and acknowledgment; a time to celebrate pivotal events, legacies, and unsung Black heroes in North America. Yet it’s important to remember that Black history is simply ‘history’, and should be acknowledged year round Where did Black History Month come from? Carter G. Woodson, a Black American Historian and son of former slaves was given credit for the creation of ‘Black History Month’. Carter G. W...oodson was alarmed that history textbooks ignored America’s Black population and he took on the challenge of writing Black Americans into history. He created the ’Study of Negro Life and History’ and founded ’The Journal of Negro History’. In 1976, 'Negro History Week’ was expanded into ‘Black History Month’. February was chosen for celebration as it coincided with birthdates of Frederick Douglass who escaped from slavery (and later became an abolitionist and civil rights leader) & Abraham Lincoln who made an ‘Emancipation Proclamation’ which abolished slavery in America’s confederate states. Our hope is that Black history will be illuminated in Canadian history more consistently. Let’s fight for this in numbers! Artwork Credit: Cami Zea / IG: @zeaink 2nd Photo: Carter G.
