BREED OF THE WEEK This week’s breed of the week is the Australian Cattle Dog. The Australian Cattle Dog is a herding breed that is extremely intelligent, active and strong minded. They are a breed who thrive when having a job to do and like to be a part of every activity. The average life span is around 12-15 years and they weigh anywhere from 30- 50 pounds. When properly trained, the Australian Cattle Dog is a loyal family pet that can be wary of strangers. They require con...stant learning and activity to keep their brains thinking. They must stay physically and mentally active to prevent boredom and destructive behaviour's. The Australian Cattle Dog is not recommended for a small household or apartment living or first time dog owners. They are active and are happiest with some acreage. They can tolerate temperature fluctuations with some shedding yearly for seasonal coat growth. The Australian Cattle Dog’s short, flat coat requires weekly brushing. BREED OF THE WEEK This week’s breed is the Miniature Schnauzer which is a small, loving, intelligent little dog that loves to play, gets along well with children and is easy to travel with. Socialized well, this dog makes a good companion and family pet. Schnauzers make good watchdogs and their bark sounds like a low, howl. They can develop ‘Small Dog Syndrome’ which can cause a certain amount of behavior problems such as separation anxiety, nervousness and excessive barki...ng. These are not typical traits but can be brought on by the dog’s environment and the people around him. Their weight is between 10 and 15 pounds and, since they shed very little, is a good choice for asthma sufferers. They should be groomed every five to eight weeks to keep them looking their best. Schnauzers are a good dog for apartment life and do well indoors so long as they get enough exercise. These energetic little dogs need daily, brisk walks or jogs to provide both mental and physical exercise with a life expectancy of about 15 years. To prevent behavior issues, their owner needs to be calm and firm and consistently display a leadership role which means making the schnauzer walk beside you and not in front.
