I like Jon Taffer. In one of his books, there is a quote: Learn from Those You Serve. I would add to this quote, "Even if the feedback you receive from them is not pretty." There is no need to get one’s back up in a situation like this read the feedback, reflect on it, assess whether you dropped the ball, and see if you can fix it.... I remember an investigation that I conducted where the respondent was very unhappy with my findings that they committed workplace violence. From that example, I recognized that investigations often include all sorts of incidental information that is important to an individual, but at the end of the day does not impact the finding one way or another. A good strategy could be to make it clear to the individual at the outset that the information will not be referenced in the report, or to acknowledge in the report that certain representations were made, but are not quoted because they don’t impact the outcome. I think this second option is the better one in that the individual can at least see that they were heard. Failing that, they might just believe you did a half-hearted job.
