Chronic pain can be a chronic concernand rightfully so. Most of us either know someone living with it or have experienced it ourselves. Treatment options are wide ranging but this month Dr. Maloski took over our blog to talk about one of her favourite options that she's seen make a world of difference for so many of her patients - Prolotherapy! What it is, how it works and who might find some relief from it are all covered and it's definitely worth a read. Check it out!

Have you tried Kamloops Thai Massage? Dr. Tamzin recently visited for the first time and was immediately reminded of her time in Thailand - the happy Thai chatter, the laughter, the kindness, and, of course, the fabulous massage! An excellent way to spend a chilly Saturday!

Trust your gut! You know that old saying your mom always repeats when it comes to intuition? Turns out it’s pretty accurate when it comes to your health as well. Why? ... Because EVERYTHING starts in your gut! A healthy gut is necessary for our body to effectively absorb the nutrients we need to stay healthy which means proper digestion is absolutely crucial to our overall health. Our gut is complex and has a direct impact on our immune system, heart health, cognitive abilities, mood and, even sleep. When our stomach enzymes and acidity levels aren’t balanced we begin to suffer from bloating, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, gas and general discomfort. While these symptoms aren’t generally considered overly severe at first, they can often be the precursor for more serious health troubles down the road. This is why it’s so important to pay attention to your body! There are so many potential causes to an uncomfortable gut and none of them will ever be fully healed by band-aid solutions like pepto bismol or tums. The key to optimal health is fully understanding your body and the root cause of any ongoing discomfort. Like mom says trust your gut. (and talk to your doctor.)

B vitamins are essential nutrients for the healthy function of practically every part of the body and Niacin or vitamin B3 is certainly no exception. Niacin has been used to help lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) since the 1950’s and studies have shown it can also raise HDL (good cholesterol) levels by 15-35%. It’s also known to help improve brain function, reduce inflammation related to arthritis and protect skin cells from sun damage. A balanced and varied die...t will ensure you’re getting adequate amounts of Niacin which is why deficiencies are extremely rare in most developed countries. While there’s no real risk of consuming too much niacin from your diet, supplemental doses should be taken with care and always under a doctor’s supervision as they can come with a variety of side effects including nausea, skin flushing, vomiting and liver toxicity. Your doctor can order the appropriate tests required to ensure higher supplemental doses of niacin will work for you. See more

Another box down! A year ago we never could have anticipated just how vital something as simple as a mask would become. Sure, they're kind of annoying and they can fog up your glasses but the protection they provide our entire community makes every itchy, irritating second of wearing them 100% worth it. ... #WearBecauseYouCare #MaskUp

The sunshine vitamin! Just one more reason why it’s so good to get out and enjoy the great outdoors! Vitamin D is essential in maintaining strong bones and teeth by helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. It’s also been shown to help support the immune system and improve resistance against some diseases. While it can be tough to obtain an adequate amount of vitamin D within your diet alone, simply spending a little time outdoors a few times a week can help ensure yo...ur body is getting the vitamin D it needs. Unfortunately, however, vitamin D deficiencies are more common than you might expect particularly during the winter months. Deficiencies are often seen in patients who have chronic disease (e.g. Diabetes), adolescents and patients over the age of 50. Fatigue, muscle aches and pains and mood changes can all be signs your body needs a little extra vitamin D. As always, talk to your doctor for specific advice on how you can help ensure all your vitamin needs are met and you stay as healthy as possible!

It was more continuing education for Dr. Tamzin this weekend BUT it seems Portugal was playing France so that comfy couch set up had to be traded for headphones and a dining room table. The things we do for the ones we love.

It's a Wellness Wednesday and Dr. Tamzin was once again in the studio with Cheryl and Rich at B100 Kamloops! This week they talked all about managing low mood. It's a topic that is always incredibly important and even more so now that winter is setting in and COVID stress is on the rise. There was lots of helpful information shared this morning but we can't stress enough how important it is to have a conversation with your primary heathcare provider if you or anyone you care for is experiencing any significant changes in mood. Everybody knows that carrots are good for your eyes, right? Well, it’s true and that’s because carrots are packed with VITAMIN A! The first vitamin in our alphabet, vitamin A, also known as retinol, is well known for supporting your eyesight but it’s also essential for growth, immune function and reproduction. It’s even known to contribute to the production of sebum, which is the oil that helps hold moisture in your skin and hair keeping them healthy and smooth.... A vitamin A deficiency may lead to night blindness, fertility issues, delayed growth in children and can lead to a higher risk of infections. Luckily for us, this essential vitamin can be found in a wide variety of foods including your favourite orange veggies, leafy greens, liver and eggs.

What are we looking at? This colourful little strip is actually an in-office urinalysis! It looks at the health of your body through your urine and quickly lets us know how your kidneys, liver and pancreas are functioning - and can even tell us if you have a urinary tract infection so we can help you get it cleared up as quickly as possible.... It's just one of the many things we can do right in our office to help get a better understanding of how your body is functioning so we can work with you to get it back on track.

Nothing says fall quite like apple season! Dr. Tamzin recently made homemade apple sauce out of some gorgeous, local, honeycrisp apples and it is ahh-mazing!! ... No added sugar and perfectly sweet! If you're looking for an easy (and healthy ) way to preserve some of this years harvest, apple sauce is one of our favourites! Boil your apples with just enough water to prevent sticking. (You don't even need to peel them if you don't want to) Once soft, puree until smooth. Run through a metal sive to get rid of any stray solids (optional but probably a good idea if you opted out of peeling) Return to your pot and add any desired spices (we highly recommend cinnamon and nutmeg) Add sweetener if necessary (Honey is an excellent sugar substitute if your apples are a little tart) If canning add 1 TBS of lemon juice for every 3 Lbs of apples. Now all that's left is to can, freeze or enjoy at your leisure! #Yum

Have you ever heard of lycopene? It’s an antioxidant that helps support heart health and may be linked to reducing the risk of certain types of cancer - and tomatoes are full of it! Better still, the lycopene found in cooked tomatoes is more readily absorbed into the body than that consumed in those that are fresh!... So, what does all this mean? It’s time to embrace canning season!!! Diced, sauced, salsa’ed or chillie’ed. No matter what the final outcome, it’s always worth an afternoon (or three) in a tomato filled kitchen.
