#MantleMondays This is a large piece of #kimberlite collected at the Renard Mine. Renard is the first #diamond mine in Quebec #Canada, and started commercial production of diamonds in 2017. #canadiandiamonds #30YearsOfDiamondsinCanada Kimberlite is an extremely rare volcanic eruption that brings #diamonds and other mantle rocks to Earth’s surface. This kimberlite sample displays the main macroscopic features of classic hypabyssal kimberlite the part of th...e kimberlite that crystallised in the pipe, and never exploded from the crater. Around 25% of the coarse #minerals are light-coloured olivine macrocrysts, that were completely serpentinised by kimberlite-derived fluids (such as carbon dioxide, water). There are also a few partially-reacted country rock xenoliths meaning they were picked up as the kimberlite exploded through the crust.
