Having dealt with the loss of loved ones throughout my life, I’ve come to realize that it often takes someone's passing to reflect on our own lives. It makes you think about your own life and why we’re here. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day, trying to accomplish and achieve all that we set out to do that... we forget we’re also here to find ways to connect and improve our experiences. The connections I’m able to make are what fuel me forward in my career getting to know my clients, their stories and the history and memories of their homes is something I genuinely cherish, and there’s nothing more rewarding for me than knowing I’ve helped someone. Through my work of selling my clients Bob and Dallas’ iconic Eichler home in Granada Hills, I met their daughter Kathy and son-in-law Ken, who came to me to sell their own mid-century modern home in Rancho Cucam...onga, which recently closed! Dallas was a gifted, award-winning artist; the house was beautifully decorated with her work and it’s something I will always remember. It’s been an honor to help multiple generations of this family on their life journey and it was so fitting to see Dallas’s artwork in her daughter’s home, as if the journey has come full circle. It’s not an easy decision to sell the place you’ve called home for twenty-plus years, but in both transactions, we feel like we found the absolute right buyers that will appreciate these masterpieces of architecture and design. Though each house received multiple offers, it was never just about accepting the highest offer; their focus was on finding the right buyer. Being part of this experience for our clients and helping them through the many steps in the transition to their new home brings me great joy and, at the end of the day, is what matters most to me as a REALTOR. Having spent several years living in Los Angeles, I’ve had my fair share of authentic Mexican cuisine and I’ve been chasing that experience since moving back to Canada and, well, Taco Bell just doesn’t cut it. Fortunately, a good friend introduced us to Maria’s Tortas Jalisco, a family-based takeout spot in Stoney Creek run by Maria herself and her daughter Helen. Everything, from the tortillas to the pico de gallo and salsas, is made fresh, in-house, with locally sourced ing...redients and is bursting with traditional flavours of Mexican cuisine with the occasional California flair. Maria’s signature dish is Sopa Azteca, a classic tomato-based soup garnished with fresh avocados, onion and cilantro mix, cotija and Oaxaca cheeses and creama. Tacos are, of course, on the menu, as are quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas, and burritos, but the real draw is the tortas, classic Mexican sandwiches with a range of toppings available, including carne asada, al pastor and chorizo. Maria’s Tortas Jalisco is open Tuesday to Saturday from 12 to 7 p.m. and is located at 432 Highway 8 in Stoney Creek. Preorders over the phone or website are required.
