Interview - John Ivay Nov 15/18 1. What’s your name? My name is John Ivay.... 2. How many years have you lived here? I moved here in November 2017. 3. When did you first come to BRCD? When it first opened in 1979. 4. How did you meet Reverend Rumball? Reverend Rumball invited some people to watch him speak at a lecture at the University of Toronto, so I went to see him there. Then we met again at the Deaf Church on Wellesley. He took over for Reverend Ethridge because he moved to Jamaica. Reverend Ethridge was born in Rochester N.Y then he came to the church on Wellesley. Reverend Rumball performed the service to marry my wife Beth and I. 5. How has BRCD helped you? I worked as a layman helping Reverend Rumball at the church. I was the treasurer for 10 yrs at TDSC (Toronto Deaf Senior’s Centre). The treasurer for 14 yrs for an insurance company called Frat. I was also the treasurer at the church for 4 years. I was married for 47 years and then my wife passed away. 6. What do you enjoy doing at BRCD? I was on the committee for 4 years for our annual Christmas play. I was in a skit about Laurel and Hardy with Don Smith. It was so funny and a lot of fun! I have so many memories from coming to the Centre. 7. Do you have any stories about Reverend Rumball? Reverend Rumball and his wife Mary-Jean really enjoyed watching our performance of Laurel and Hardy. I remember them laughing so hard they were crying. It was such a good time for everyone.
