Free to each household in Iglulik and Sanirajak, two large maps with traditional place names. IHT and the CNGO are proud to be able to provide access to this important traditional knowledge. In the making for over 20 years (documenting and verifying over and over again), these beautiful maps are ready to be shipped. Expect them in Iglulik and Sanirajak in the next couple of weeks.

Sealskin for the roof, bowhead whale bones for the frame, sinew for thread; over 100 years ago, Inuit families lived in sod houses like this one during the winter months.

We are nearing the end of Wild Archaeology Season 2's premiere on APTN - this christmas eve episode 12 airs (of 13) and it is spectacular - shot in remote rocky... island of Qaummaarviit (Iqaluit) to excavate the traditional Inuit whalebone winter house that would have been home to the ancestors of Inookie Adamie, Iqaluit’s oldest elder and the traditional steward of Qaummaarviit. This is an Inuit led reclamation of cultural heritage and indigenous archaeology in action. for more info see our website . www.wildarchaeology.com (link in bio) and we also have fantastic VR videos on our @youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch . . . . . . #Inuit #Iqaluit #arcticarchaeology #whalebone #InuitHeritage #Niaqunngut #carvings #bowhead #whalehunt #Inuitculture #culturalrevitalization #dance #traditionaldrumming #Inuktut #decolonization #indigenousarchaeology #Dakota #Lakota #archaeologist #archaeology #canadiantv #tvdocumentary -#indigenouspeople #indigenoushistory #indigenousculture #indigenouslanguages #palaeontologist

Speaking of place names... The traditional name for Devon Island is Tallurutit (this is where the name Tallurutiup Imanga, for the "northwest passage" comes from). In interviews with elders in Resolute, many years ago, we were told that "the eroded cliffs on this island look like traditional tattoos on a woman's chin. And here, on this island, was found one of the oldest surviving representations of a human face found in Canada, a tiny artifact more than 3500 years old. And doesn't she look like she has a tattooed face? How cool that this ancient, beautiful tattooed face was found on this island named (by Inuit) for its resemblance to the tattoos on a woman's face. The tiny (only a few cm tall) artifact is on display at the Canadian Museum of History.
