For the last 32 years, the IRC Native Hockey tournament has been a weekend of excitement and entertainment organized at the same time as an Inuvialuit cultural weekend initiated a few years back. Communities in and around the region would send their best native hockey teams to participate in this annual event. While other options are being considered- the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and the IRC Native Hockey Planning Committee are announcing the tournaments cancellatio...n for the Roy "Sugloo" Ipana Arena in 2021. "IRC would have liked to hold this classic hockey event and cultural weekend" said Duane Smith, IRC's Chair and CEO; "but we must follow public health guidelines and continue to promote safety measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus." Chair Smith has reached out to the IRC Native Hockey Planning Committee and has expressed his regrets.

Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) honors all those who served on Remembrance Day (Inuvik, NT) November 11, 2020 Today, IRC is remembering the contribution of all of those who have served our country through the many wars and peacekeeping efforts. This ultimate sacrifice cannot be taken lightly as it is because of them we have a democracy and can live in such a great Nation such as Canada. We recognize those that made this sacrifice, leaving their families and communi...ties, many who lost their lives to keep this country free. We include the Canadian Rangers and all other service members, who have long served this country to ensure that Canada remains safe and protected for many generations. Inuvialuit Regional Corporation would like to extend our gratitude to those who serve our country as we continue to function and progress in a free society, able to negotiate in good faith, and face global challenges together. Koana, Quyannaini, Quyanaqpaq - thank you for your service and I hope that we and fellow Canadians can all spend this day safely with family, feeling grateful to those who have served Canada" said IRC Chair and CEO, Duane Ningaqsiq Smith.

November 6, 2020 - Inuvialuit Regional Corporation offers its deepest condolences to the family, the community of Inuvik and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region on the loss of a leader, a mentor and respected elder Edward Lennie (Inglangasuk). The loss of Edward cuts deep into our community and our thoughts are now with the family. We all prayed for him and hoped he would make another recovery, acknowledged IRC Chair and CEO Duane Smith. Edward is a respected Elder and lead...er within our community; we will mourn him and the many others we continue to lose during these difficult times. Edward was a former member of the Inuvialuit Enrolment Committee a committee responsible for reviewing all applications for acceptance into the Inuvialuit Trust. Known as the father of the Northern Games - a revitalization project of our Inuvialuit games dating back as far as the early 1960’s, Edward raised his family while having to experience many personal losses and always continuing to serve his community in many leadership roles. The legacy of the Northern Games will continue to flourish through much of the efforts of Edward Lennie. A recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award in 2003 (now the Indspire Awards) recognizing his volunteer work in championing the legacy of the Northern Games - Edward made the Northern Games one of his life’s mission. Even in his failing health he continued to offer his support to all participants involved as recently as last February at the annual Northern Games Summit at East Three Illiharvik in Inuvik NT. Edward always encouraged children and provided words of wisdom including never to use the word I can’t. He encouraged them to always try their best. Edward and his wife Jeannie welcomed many foster children into their home and raised them as part of the family, he was also a guardian to many youth bringing them on the land teaching cultural ways and traditional values. We will remember Edward Lennie and mourn his loss - remembering his mentorship, his community spirit, and his leadership.

Message From the Chair September 10th is noted as World Suicide Prevention Day. Many of you will participate in community events hosted by different organizations to help raise awareness, honour those we have lost to suicide and provide support to one another. These events can be very healing for Inuvialuit and also may evoke emotions that are difficult to handle. Please be aware of the crisis support phone lines you can call and make use of them any time you feel overwhelme...d, they are there to help! For crisis situations call 911, your local emergency number, or call any of the following 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Hope for Wellness Helpline 1-855-242-3310 Canada Suicide Prevention Service 1-833-456-4566 or text or chat @crisisservicescanada.ca National Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-8255 NWT Helpline 1-800-661-0844 and on facebook Kids Helpline 1-800-668-6868 or crisis text 686868 Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Helpline 1-800-265-3333 IRC acknowledges that 24-hour hotlines are not enough. To prevent suicide in our region, we need to take action. Goal #3 of IRC’s Strategic Plan states Improve the capacity and well-being of individuals, families and communities. In order to work toward this strategic goal, IRC is working on the creation of a Regional Suicide Prevention Strategy. The strategy is in the beginning stages of development and is intended to be largely informed by Inuvialuit in our region. In the coming months IRC will be conducting interviews with front-line staff, elders, leadership and anyone else who would like to be included to help inform the development of the strategy. The strategy will focus on recommendations and actions so we will be able to use it to inform future programming, advocate for funding and advocate for improved government services. If you have interest in being contacted to provide input to the strategy, please email [email protected] and someone will be in touch in the future. (Note: this is not a support service, if you are seeking support please refer to the crisis lines listed above). Inuvialuit have had to overcome many adverse experiences in our lives. By working together, supporting one another and turning to our Elders for guidance we will continue to thrive. IRC’s Regional Suicide Prevention Strategy will be influenced by culture and cultural practices. I encourage all of you to turn to your Elders, drum dancing, the land, the language, sewing etc. to help us through difficult times as we know we can find healing in our rich and vibrant Inuvialuit culture.
