Winter’s Hidden Haven Hidden Valley marks half a century in Muskoka Away from the bustling ski hills of central Ontario and Quebec, Hidden Valley Resort has quietly been the home to Muskoka ski enthusiasts for the past half a century. Marking its 50th anniversary this year, the club has now fostered multiple generations of families and even nurtured the career of a future Olympic champion.... Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area is located just outside the town of Huntsville and was opened in 1965 by Bill Waterhouse and Ed Seagram, making it one of Ontario’s oldest and most established ski areas. The original 50 memberships rapidly grew to a couple hundred families and in 2008 the name was changed to the Muskoka Ski Club in recognition of the world-renowned area in which the hill is located. Once upon a time, the dog sled was one of the preferred methods of travel in northern Ontario but now slicing through the snow behind a team of huskies is a true winter thrill. Located just outside of Huntsville, in northern Muskoka, North Ridge Ranch offers half-day tours and one-hour tours most days throughout the winter season. Brad and Leah Fetterley have operated the kennel there for more than 15 years. Owners and operators of North Ridge Ranch, the Fetterleys run a team of more than 60 sled dogs. In January 2020, Dallas Grogan warned his three daughters about the dangers of the new virus. Girls, I worked through SARS and this is going to be much worse, he told them. The 86-year-old retired doctor knew what he was talking about. But three months after he advised his children, Dr. Grogan was on a ventilator, the first COVID-19 patient in South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. In April, he was the first Covid-19 patient to die in South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. Almost one ...year later, we recount Dallas' experience and gratitude for the state-of-the-art medical and extraordinarily compassionate support extended to Dallas Grogan and his entire family by the staff of South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. With Ontario currently in its second lockdown, Dallas' experience highlights the importance of supporting our local healthcare workers as they continue to support the many folks suffering from COVID-19.
