International Overdose Awareness Day Brantford 18.12.2020

The horrific reality for families of people who use drugs. There was no need for my friend and BSUN member Dawn to have to go through this amount of grieve. If the federal and provincial governments treated people who use socially unacceptable drugs the way they treated the rest of society, there would not be 17 thousand plus families going through the trauma Dawn is experiencing after loosing two brothers to opioid poisoning. Why after four years of rising deaths do we as a... society, allow our governments to get away with not implementing the steps that health officials agree would save thousands if not, tens of thousands of lives. Under the Criminal code of Canada wouldn't this be considered negligence causing death? Criminal Negligence Marginal note:Criminal negligence 219 (1) Every one is criminally negligent who (a) in doing anything, or (b) in omitting to do anything that it is his duty to do, shows wanton or reckless disregard for the lives or safety of other persons.

I was totally disgusted by Tuesday's City of Brantford's City council meeting. It was the 3rd reading of Brian Van Tilburgs motion to suspend the needle exchange indefinitely. The amount of attacks on people who use drugs were disgusting. I couldn't believe that the hate that was coming from some of these councilors. How can motions pass without out any factual evidence being presented is beyond me. Thank goodness we have a system were we can complain and take legal action. Which I plan to do. After reading the comments on the Expositors FaceBook page it is clear that they language that came from city council was igniting hate and threats towards a protected population under the Human Rights Code.
