So much has changed since last March when COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. The gaps between the vulnerable and the privileged have been exposed and wide...ned. This #WorldHealthDay, let us focus on a way forward that is inclusive, fair and where everyone has the right to good health here in Ontario and around the world. We’ll get through this together.

Congratulations

Each year the Government of Ontario recognizes volunteers who provide committed and dedicated service to an organization in Ontario. We are delighted to announce that Provincial Councillors Margo MacKinnon; Pickering, Kathy Newnes; London, Donna O'Reilly; Freelton, Virginia Reade; Hamilton, Renate Schuetz, Owen Sound and Sandra Smith, Chatham are recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for 2020. Nominees to the Ontario Volunteer Service Award are selected from the... field of volunteers in their organization. Recipients are recognized by the length of time they’ve volunteered ranging from five to 65 years of continuous service. To be nominated one must be a resident and volunteer in Ontario and an active member in an organization that has existed for at least five years. The award is presented at ceremonies across Ontario from March to June. All recipients are given a stylized trillium service pin and a personalized certificate to acknowledge their years of service. Unfortunately in-person ceremonies are not possible during the period of COVID. The Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries will be arranging the 2020 award to be presented virtually early in the new year. Congratulations to these six members of the Provincial Chapter of Ontario IODE, we applaud your dedication to IODE. #OntarioVolunteerServiceAwards2020 #volunteer #services #honoursandawards #Congratulations

At the time of our 100th Annual Meeting on April 23, 2020, we were not able to meet in person due to COVID19. As a result, we were not able to have Detective Sergeant (D/Sgt.) Steve Coburn join us, to present the 2020 IODE Ontario Police Community Relations Award. Saturday November 14, 2020 it was our pleasure to meet D/Sgt. Coburn in person at the OPP Dufferin County Detachment, Shelburne. Provincial President Linda Gryner and Citizenship Officer Shirley Ann Elms, were jo...ined by members of the local detachment, Shelley Nemeth, OPP Awards Coordinator from Orillia and OPP dignitaries. The IODE Ontario Police Community Relations Award is presented annually to an OPP officer who brings a level of professionalism and service to their community. D/Sgt Coburn has seen first-hand the perpetual relationship between poverty, low educational achievement and encounters with the justice system. These conditions impose a considerable financial burden on social support systems in addition to exacting great personal costs. Upon learning that childhood nutrition dramatically improves these social outcomes, D/Sgt Coburn was inspired to fight food insecurity in his community. As an avid runner, he created a fundraising race and the Compass Run for Food was born in June 2014. Since the start of the Compass Run for Food through Island Lake Conservation Area in Orangeville, $186,000 has been raised and donated directly to three local food banks and six elementary school breakfast programs in Dufferin County. CENOTAPH ADDITION DEDICATION Men and women from Carleton Place have served in nine military conflicts since 1953. In June this year, these conflicts were etched... into the cenotaph’s lower right wing. Funding for the initiative was received from Veterans Affairs Canada and the municipality’s Community Enrichment Program.During Wednesday’s Remembrance Day event, the cenotaph addition was dedicated by Branch 192 padre David Andrew, with members of the Captain Hooper Chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire taking part. The local IODE was instrumental in the construction of the cenotaph, which was unveiled in 1924. See more
