February 7 to 13, 2021 is International Development Week (IDW) across Canada! IRIS Mundial and its volunteers work really hard to create a better world by improving visual health through three types of activities: one-time projects, permanent programs and training missions. The spotlight will shine on our volunteers this December 5th! Since 1985, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) has established International Volunteer Day to celebrate volunteers on a global scale. It aims to draw attention to the great work done by volunteers all around the world. IRIS Mundial would like to take this opportunity to thank its many volunteers for their wonderful involvement in allowing thousands of people to see the world better!

Ce 5 décembre, les bénévoles sont à l’honneur ! Depuis 1985, l’Assemblée générale de l’Organisation des Nations-Unies (ONU) a instauré la journée internationale des bénévoles afin de célébrer le bénévolat à l’échelle mondiale. Elle a pour objectif d’attirer l’attention sur le travail formidable accompli partout dans le monde par des bénévoles. IRIS Mundial en profite pour remercier ses nombreux bénévoles pour leur merveilleuse implication afin de permettre à des milliers de personnes de mieux voir le monde !

NEWS FROM PPFB ST LOUIS The pandemic has spared no one, and our ongoing program in Senegal was no exception. As we announced at the end of April, our partner, the Association St-Louisienne pour la Vue (ASV), has had to cease all activity as of Mid-March. The community ophthalmology center has however been able to reopen its doors since the end of June and once again welcome patients for screening and visits by an ophthalmologist during ophthalmological days organized on a bim...onthly basis. Other activities, such as mobile clinics and awareness raising, have not yet been able to resume. As schools in Senegal have yet to reopen, screening activities in schools are still at a standstill. During a consultation with our donor, the Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie of Quebec, we decided to extend the duration of the project by an additional 5 months to be able to achieve the planned objectives. International White Cane Day takes place each October 15th and the day is observed worldwide to recognize the movement of blind people from dependency to full participation in society.

Today is World Sight Day. According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), at least 1 billion people have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. Universal eye health is an important health goal and it can be achieved with our collective support. #HopeInSight.
