Irma Agricultural Society 08.01.2021

Sharing this letter to Premier Kenney this evening by a concerned citizen, our Arena Board Chair. January 7, 2021 Dear Mr. Kenney,... I want to start by saying I fully respect and understand the difficulty of the position you have been in for the better part of the past year. In a time of uncertainty I feel you have given an honest attempt to try to appease people of all different views. Unfortunately with the latest shutdown, and the extension added today, I feel that you have forgotten about a whole demographic of citizens. I have chosen to raise my family in the small community of Irma, population about 600. We are a very strong, community minded town. We have an awesome hockey program, a beautiful golf course, a softball association that is second to none, and many other amazing groups and clubs. The main difference with the groups in a small town compared to larger centres is the financial support that we get from municipal, provincial, and federal programs, as well as from large corporations. We don’t have a large population to warrant huge rec grants and we don’t have the likes of Walmart or Canadian Tire doing large corporate sponsorships. We depend almost entirely on the generosity of our community members and our small businesses. For years these small businesses have kept communities like ours running through hard work, tenacity, and generosity. Now, despite an amazing dedication to public safety, they are closed or operating in manners in which they are probably losing money. In a community like ours, buildings like Arenas and Curling rinks scrape by, usually losing money every year. As a community people pull together and make it work. Whether it is donations, work bees, coaching, reffing, or just buying a burger from the volunteer run booth on Saturday mornings, we do what needs to be done. Where I become lost and confused is when I look on the news or Social Media and see these larger centres. I see people elbow to elbow in West Edmonton Mall. I see Walmart with lines 15 people deep. I see full liquor stores, and all the weed you could ever need. 100’s of people in lines at mountain ski resorts....but our Arena that houses a minor hockey program, a senior team, a couple rec teams, and a skating club can’t be open? In Sept/Oct we were given new strict guidelines and regulations that needed to be followed in order to reopen facilities. We did it with a smile on our faces, just for the opportunity to let our kids play the sport they love. We spent thousands of dollars on signage and sanitation equipment, regulated ice times, extended hours to meet capacity restrictions, and jumped through many other hoops. Most of these things were made possible by the time and donations of community members. I strongly hope that when you reconvene to discuss restrictions, you consider small towns like ours. If buildings like the arena can’t operate this year, if we need to refund money because people can’t use the facilities, if we have to shut the Arena down who is going to be there to help us next year? The small businesses that also aren’t operating? The families who used to work for these businesses? Our government? Issues like these are being overlooked and many communities are being painted with too wide a brush. There is an immeasurable difference between the Irma Arena and any facility in Edmonton or Calgary. The biggest difference right now? It won’t be the small arena getting the government bail outs when this is all over. Mitch MacKay
