If you could cure ONE disease, which would it be?? Tell us in the comments Critical Illness Insurance is a policy that pays you a lump sum of money based on the diagnosis of a critical illness. It can protect you from the risk of the big 3: Cancer, heart attack, and stroke.... And can cover you for many more, depending on the policy you choose. It's different from Disability insurance in that it is not based on your ability to work or your income level. It's paid after surviving the diagnosis of a qualifying critical illness. Making it a great policy for self-employed people! We often combine these policies with Disability Insurance because it can cover unexpected costs. Like over-the-counter medication, outfitting if your abilities have changed, and replacing your partner's income. They will likely need to take time off of work to bring you to appointments, care for the family, the home, and most other things. They're also very affordable policies. Writing off the premiums paid for a disability insurance policy, as a business expense means the benefit can be taxable... Normally, if you get hurt or sick, and qualify for a claim, you would NOT have to pay tax on your benefit income. BUT if you are a business owner or self-employed and you've been writing off your premiums as an expense, you will have to pay tax on the benefit you're paid.... Why? Because you can't get out of paying taxes! We advise our Clients NOT to write off their Disability Insurance Premiums so that they can keep their whole benefit. If you are an employee with disability coverage, check to see if you are paying the insurance cost yourself. If you are paying, the benefit is tax-free. But, if your employer is paying, they are likely claiming the expense and the benefit will be taxable. #letstalkmoney #canadianbusinesses
