Foam roll mobility Post by coach Aziza Foam rollers are wonderful for mobility (and not just in terms of tissue release). Try using a roller as a aid in some of your mobility exercises. ... Here are two to get you started. 1) Foam roll lat pulldowns Lie on your stomach with a foam roll in front of you. Extend your arms out on the roller. Lift your chest and legs off the floor. Exhale as you roll you hands down to about forehead level. Inhale as you roll them back out. For some spice, keep your legs up the whole time. You can also perform this with you legs on the ground. Just remember to keep your chest up throughout the exercise. 2) Foam roll slides Similar to the first exeecise, this movement focuses on back extension. Begin again lying on your stomach with a roll in front of you and your arms extended on the foam roll. Exhale as you roll your hands towards your chest letting the movement lift your chest off the ground. Inhale as you roll back out. Things to remember Maintain a neutral neck. Careful not to crunch iyour head upwards or drop it down. Draw your hips and ribs together to protect your low back. Dont push it! Listen to your body. If you start to feel pain, keep your movements small or stop all together. If you're looking to increase your mobility an/or strength, the ILT team is here to help! We offer a variety of small fitness classes and personalized training programs. Visit ironliontraining.ca for more information and to contact us. Drop by next week for some more foam roll goodness! #torontofitness #fitness #conditioning #mobility #foamroll #community #strength #balance #simplicity #findyourpowerinthepride

Progress, not Perfection Post by: Dr. Helen Kollias If you've been around Coach Steph you've heard her say, "progress, not perfection."... What does that mean? What's wrong with perfect? Perfection is impossible, and in the current situation (that will be a history course one day) the idea of anything close to perfection feels crushing. Perfection is saying "When I get all the things I need I'll start" or "I didn't do it perfectly, I failed, so I'll stop." Progress is saying I will do something, anything no matter how small to move a little bit forward. How to focus on progress: 1. Take small steps or even teeny tiny steps - just take steps. Eat one more portion of vegetables or buy a portion of vegetables. 2. Expect things to go wrong. I'm sure most of us are waiting for Godzilla to show up, but this is more of what is likely to happen to derail progress? 3. You will feel like you've failed. You will have self-doubt. Everybody has self-doubt your goal isn't to stop feeling it but to keep taking your small steps despite feeling it. 4. Quit tomorrow. If the small step seems too much today, take an even smaller step (a 20-minute walk becomes 10 minutes;) and if even the smallest step seems too much tell yourself you can quit tomorrow if you feel like it. There is no 'falling off the wagon.' There is no wagon to fall off of- it's just life. Sometimes you will be overwhelmed and just doing the smallest thing is all you can do. It wasn't what you planned but it was something. That's progress. Just keep showing up and taking small steps. #Tuesday #tuesdaytip from ILT resident expert Dr. Helen Kollias Coping with uncertainty... Most of us have been dealing with a lot more uncertainty over the last year. Living with uncertainty is hard. We like predictability it makes us feel safe. Here are some tips to help you deal with the stress of uncertainty: Control what you can control and surrender to what you can’t control. Resisting reality won’t help and prolongs the pain. Self-compassion. Treat yourself the way you’d treat a close friend. Some days will be better than others and don’t compare yourself to others you’re only seeing a part of their lives. Self-care.There’s a misguided idea that putting everyone’s needs ahead of yours is virtuous. Especially for women. It’s not. Investing in yourself lets you show up as your best self for everyone else. Physical self-care like exercising, eating healthier, and getting more sleep will bleed into other areas like emotional, and mental health. Ask for help. If you’re having trouble managing reach out to friends, family, or a counselor. Reach out to Iron Lion Training for compassionate coaching, support, and to learn more about self-care. #stressmanagement #selfcare #selflove #community #strength #balance #simplicity #findyourpowerinthepride

#tgif Recovery ~ balance Post by super coach @therealmiamazin ... Recovery allows for improved performance, permits time for our body to heal itself in preparation for the next training load, and decreases the risk of potential injury. While all of these benefits allow for the attainment of new goals and personal bests (PBS) they’re also required for general life balance as well. Training imposes STRESS (as physical load) on the body, just like life imposes stress (emotional / mental load) on our mind. If we don’t get respite or recovery time, we miss out on opportunities to heal, in order to grow & attain new goals. Take time for rest & some self-care. If you need help with fitting training into life, for better life balance, ask one of our incredible coaches for help! #rest #recovery #selfcare #community #strength #BALANCE #simplicity #findyourpowerinthepride
