Statement from IR Society Re: David Rayside Undergraduate Scholarship We at IRSOC would like to acknowledge that we share the concerns of many in the International Relations community regarding the allocation of this year’s David Rayside Undergraduate Scholarship by the U of T Political Science department. The scholarship’s namesake, David Rayside, is a prominent gay rights activist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science. Professor Rayside cofounded th...e Canadian Lesbian and Gay Studies Association and the Positive Space Campaign at U of T. He was also influential in investigations into police brutality targeting LGBT people in Toronto, and the campaign to include sexual orientation in the Ontario Human Rights Code. We urge the Political Science department to reconsider its allocation of the David Rayside Undergraduate Scholarship, to honour its namesake's legacy and the award’s stated purpose of awarding student leaders active in the promotion of greater public understanding of social and cultural diversity and enhanced inclusion of historically marginalized communities. An awardee's conduct must honour diversity and inclusion, not antagonize these aims. We second the Arts and Science Student Union’s calls for: 1) Greater transparency when it comes to awards at UofT, particularly those which seek to promote equity, diversity, and inclusivity on our campus 2) All departments to review their guidelines for scholarships and awards, and make clear how a student meets the qualities of an award being given 3) All departments to ensure that they maintain a diverse selections committee, and work to improve the transparency of their selections We hope to ensure that the International Relations program remains a safe space for marginalized peoples to pursue their academic interests, share their passion for the study of international relations and find a sense of community. Racism, homophobia, misogyny, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry have no place in our program or our community. The IRSOC is listening to your concerns and we urge you to continue voicing them.
