[WORLD OF AAC PROFESSIONALS] My name is Nothando Mtungwa. I am based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. I am a Special Education Needs and Inclusion Educator by profession.... I am currently pursuing a PhD in Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication at University of Pretoria in South Africa. I completed an MA in Special Educational Needs and Inclusion at the University of Northampton in United Kingdom between 2018-2019. I have taught in rural schools in Zimbabwe for 5 years as a high school teacher. Furthermore, I taught in a special school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in South Africa as a Special Needs educator and Behavior specialist. I provided interventions for learners with intellectual disabilities such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Severe, Multiple and Profound Disabilities, Social Emotional Mental Health and other learning difficulties. I am passionate about providing communication interventions for individuals with communication challenges in hard-to-reach areas where children with disabilities are still excluded from accessing education and healthcare. My interests are to create low-cost communication interventions for children with complex communication needs. I am actively involved in raising awareness on disability and context specific interventions in Southern Africa as there are still challenges in identification, assessment and lack of adequate professionals and facilities to cater for children with disabilities.
