What advice would you give students in their fourth year who want to become consultants? A 1.Get involved in consulting extracurriculars - You will pick up skills that are rarely practiced in normal course work/coops (breaking down a case study, the grey areas present in real-world examples) 2.Be a generalist Consulting is less about being a specialist in a specific skill, and more about having a wide-reaching skill set that can be applied to a diverse mix of situations. Yo...u will need to be able to problem solve using mechanical knowledge, chemical knowledge, stats knowledge, etc. 3.Don’t overlook communication skills Being able to effectively implement an improvement is hugely contingent on being able to simply and efficiently communicate its benefits and details. Take advantage of the opportunities you have to do this in class/co-op. Be intentional about developing this skill in every situation (EX: push yourself in your next class presentation to get the critical details across in as few words as possible.) 4.Start building empathy Day-to-day you will be interacting with people from every different walk of life. Engineering (or whatever program you are in) tends to be homogenous and only prepares you to deal with certain types of people. Understand that many people are not like this, so come from a place of compassion and understanding instead of getting frustrated when people do not act in the ways you would expect. Get outside of your bubble and interact with as many different people as you can.
