Why Your Dentist Wants You to Chew Gum We recommended daily four habits for good dental hygiene: Brush, Floss, Rinse and Chew. Today, we will clear that up by focusing on chewing! Why is Saliva Important?... Saliva washes out your mouth several times during the day. Saliva is predominately water, but it also contains proteins and minerals needed to keep your teeth healthy and to digest your food. If You Have Too Little Saliva If you don’t have enough saliva production, it can result in bad breath and/or a dry mouth. Dry mouth is usually temporary; however those who suffer from a persistent condition of dry mouth are referred to as having xerostomia. Xerostomia causes your mouth tissue, tongue, and gums to be swollen and painful. What is meant by chew in the daily four? Chew, in this instance, is encouraging you to chew sugarless gum after eating. Why? Because when you chew gum; it stimulates saliva production, which in turn reduces plaque, cleans food particles out of your mouth, and neutralizes acids that can break down tooth enamel. Kinds of toothpaste The best strategy for selecting toothpaste is to ask your dental hygienist or dentist to recommend a product.... Always pick a toothpaste with fluoride to prevent cavities. After that, it’s a matter of personal choice. Use the one that tastes and feels best. Toothbrushes Bristles are the main factor in toothbrush choice. Most dentists recommend soft bristles, for adults and kids, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gums. Hard or stiff bristles are not more effective at removing plaque or stains and can actually cause damage to your teeth and gums. Pick a toothbrush head size that easily fits your mouth and touches one or two teeth at a time. That means an infant or a young child needs a very small one. Ask your dentist which features and bristle head design will work best in your mouth. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Water Picks Water picks, also known as oral water irrigators, aren’t for everyone. They work best if you have braces or other dental work that traps food. They don’t remove plaque; only brushing with toothpaste and flossing can do that. Mouthwashes and Rinses Mouthwash can do more than simply freshen your breath -- it can ward off gum disease. But that’s only if you use a bacteria-fighting rinse. A product with fluoride can help prevent tooth decay. Practice Good Dental Hygiene: Tips for Kids We need help from parents and caregivers to continue the good habits our dentists recommend. Here are a few good dental hygiene tips for kids and easy ways you can help us help them: Watch Those Drinks... While fruit juices and sports drinks can be a healthy alternative to soda and other artificial drinks, drinking too much can end up doing more harm than good in the long run. The sugar in these drinks can quickly eat away the enamel on your child’s teeth, especially if he or she is consuming them all day long from a sippy cup or a refillable bottle. These drinks taste good and might be one of the only sources of sugar your kids have so weeding them out will not be easy, but it’s the best thing for their teeth in the long run. Lead by Example When it comes to brushing and caring for your teeth, your children take more cues from you than you might think. This is one area where you really do need to practice what you preach. Brushing should last for at least two minutes and cover all surfaces of the teeth and tongue. Flossing should include every tooth every time, no matter how tempting it is to cut corners. Remember that if your child is under age 2, then you should be brushing and flossing for them. Don’t Skip Dentist Visits If you have anxiety about going to the dentist, you may be passing down those fears to your children without realizing it. Starting dental appointments as soon as the first teeth appear (around age 1) will help establish going to the dentist as a positive experience, rather than one that’s plagued with fear about cavities or other problems. The Mouth helps in maintaining the health of other organs and also of your fetus! Scientific studies have proven that there are more than 40 types of diseases that can occur from the mouth. The mouth harbours 600 different types of bacterial colonies. These bacteria can travel through the bloodstream and reach different organs and can cause problems there as well. HERE IS WHAT ONE CAN DO TO TAKE CARE OF TEETH: Brush twice daily. We recommend brushing twice. Brushing before sleeping is mandatory. The production of saliva during sleep decreases and bacterial activity increases. Brushing removes lodged food and reduces bacterial content and their activity. Warm saline rinse: It is the best protection that one can give to teeth. Through the process of osmosis, all the unwanted bacteria are removed and rinsing is easy to follow, even when one is working. Every day, your tooth enamel withstands attacks from acids, including those manufactured in your mouth when you eat and those that come from acidic foods like oranges or tomato sauce. Food with sugar or starch can become acidic in your mouth, and the plaque and bacteria that result can harm your enamel, softening or even eliminating it. Making special efforts to protect your tooth enamel will keep your mouth healthy and lessen your chances of developing cavities. You can ke...ep it safe in a number of different ways: be careful when you brush, avoid soda and other acidic drinks, drink through a straw. Flossing daily can protect your tooth enamel from gradual loss, too, by removing bacteria and plaque around the gumline. Be careful when removing a retainer or dentures from your mouth, as these can scrape against tooth enamel and cause abrasion. You can watch for signs of tooth enamel erosion to know when additional steps might be necessary to combat enamel loss. Symptoms can include: tooth sensitivity, especially when eating or drinking hot or cold foods, discoloration or yellowing of the teeth, rough edges on the teeth. You cannot replace tooth enamel once it has eroded or been scraped off. But you can strengthen the enamel you have and reduce the loss from overbrushing and acid. You can look for a toothpaste that protects the gums and enamel, and you can also use anti-bacterial mouthwash after every meal to rinse away bacteria that may eat away at tooth enamel if you do not remove them.
