In June of 1978, a small parade of Italian cars wound its way down Preston Street and the adjoining streets of Little Italy as part of Ottawa’s annual Italian Festival. Italian cars had become more popular at the time and were an economical alternative to the gas guzzlers from Detroit. But there were also Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia sports cars that were attracting enthusiasts. Delio D’Angelo and Giovanni Centofanti, who were soon to become the co-owners of Frank’s Auto... Centre, saw the parade along with their expanding clientele as a celebration of this growing passion for Italian cars. And so, the first Italian Car Parade in Ottawa under the banner of Frank’s Auto Centre town place on that on that spring day in 1978. Delio and Giovanni did not know that their little parade would go on to become the largest parade of Italian automobiles in Canada. The parade celebrated its 41th anniversary in 2019. Growing in size and stature every year, the event attracts over 150 cars, participants from Montreal and Toronto, and thousands of spectators along Preston Street. Under the banner of the Italian Car Club of Ottawa (ICCO) since 2012 and the sponsorship of the Preston Street BIA, the Italian Car Parade has become a centerpiece of the Italian Festival and a tourist attraction for Ottawa in conjunction with the annual Ferrari Festival. It is therefore with great regret that the ICCO, presided by Delio D’Angelo, wishes to announce the cancellation of the event for 2020. This is due to the City of Ottawa’s state of emergency prohibiting large gatherings until June 30, 2020. The parade was to be held on June 20. We look forward to joining with you to celebrate the 42st edition of the parade in 2021! In the meantime, we implore everyone to stay safe, stay at home, and practice your social distancing when you must go out. To raise your spirits, visualize the little multicolor Italian cars, and those red Ferraris, cruising down Preston Street and bringing smiles to the faces of the children and the adults too. We will be back! The Executive of the Italian Car Club of Ottawa
