April 29, 2020 To: Canada Takeout RE: IL FORNELLO Restaurants and Uber Eats... Good Morning, I am very upset that Uber Eats has refused to reduce their 30% "commission" for delivery while presenting in their advertising that they are supporting restaurants by waiving their "delivery" fee during the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants do not benefit from a waived delivery fee. The fact is the Uber Eats business model actually benefits from the forced closure of sit down dining rooms since more people will be wanting to order food delivered to their homes and Uber Eats receives 30% of the cost of those meals. While restaurants will no doubt see more Uber Eats orders, this is no longer "additional" revenue augmenting dining room sales, it is now the main source of revenue at the exorbitant cost of 30% to the restaurants. Therefore, I have instructed all six IL FORNELLO Restaurants in the GTA to turn off the Uber Eats order tablet for Canada Takeout Day next Wednesday, May 6, 2020. We will not take any Uber Eats orders. We will instead encourage our customers to order for pick up at the restaurants. No doubt we will lose sales next Wednesday, but I do not want Uber Eats to benefit from the publicity surrounding this initiative unless and until they reduce their commission significantly. I would encourage all restaurants in Toronto and indeed across Canada to do the same - turn off Uber Eats on Wednesday, May 6, 2020. We need to send a message to Uber Eats and we need to make our customers aware of the cost to a restaurant when they use Uber Eats to order their favourite foods.
