Throwback to August 2020 when our Community Action and Sustainability Committee recycled bottles and cans from our Victoria office, stuffing $95.20 worth of refundables into Rachel's little car. Archipelago is seeking hard working and reliable workers to assist with the delivery of it’s groundfish dockside monitoring program in Port Hardy, BC. Hours of work can be irregular with weekend and evening work required. ... DUTIES Assist a Fisheries Observer by tagging halibut and counting fish. Identification of all species landed. Accurate recording of piece counts of offloaded species. Monitor compliance of fishery regulations. REQUIRED SKILLS Requires fine motor skills, manual dexterity, and use of both hands. Ability to stand at a fish grading table for long periods of time. Ability to bend at waist to reach and slide halibut weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work flexible schedules including irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and directions. Ability to identify commercially important marine species considered an asset. Valid BC Drivers License with a reliable vehicle is an asset. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Wages is $15.57/hour with a guaranteed minimum 4-hour callout on all days worked. The hours and work schedules are variable as they are governed by the landing times of the fishing vessels. The work is primarily in Port Hardy, but the ability to travel to other fish landing ports is desirable. Workers must provide their own rain gear and boots suitable for work at a fish offloading station. Archipelago is seeking honest and reliable workers to assist with the delivery of it’s groundfish dockside monitoring program in Ucluelet, BC. Hours of work can be irregular with weekend and evening work required. ... DUTIES Monitor and document the offload activities of groundfish commercial fishing vessels. Identification of all species landed. Accurate recording of offloaded weights into electronic data systems and on paper. Monitor compliance of fishery regulations. Perform biological sampling of selected species. REQUIRED SKILLS Highly self-motivated with strong organizational skills. Ability to work flexible schedules including irregular hours, evenings and weekends. Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and meet strict timelines. Ability to identify commercially important marine species considered an asset. High school graduation as a minimum. Knowledge of the fishing industry is an asset. Valid BC Drivers Licence (or equivalent to) with a reliable vehicle. The job is physically demanding and candidates should be capable of occasionally lifting or moving fish (up to 50 pounds) and climb ladders up to 25 feet to board fishing vessels. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Competitive wage starting at $18.00/hour with a guaranteed minimum 4-hour callout on all days worked. Hourly rates increase by length of service and hours worked to $18.98/hour, $20.19/hour and $21.55/hour. Must obtain Fisheries Observer Certification through Fisheries and Oceans, Canada*. This required certification training is provided to successful candidates in our 2-week training course. All successful candidates will need to provide a criminal record check to be certified as a Fisheries Observer as required by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The work is primarily in Ucluelet and Tofino, but the ability to travel within the north island region to other fish landing ports is desirable. *Fisheries Act and Fisheries (General) Regulations state that a person who owns, operates, manages, or is an employee of an enterprise that catches, cultures, processes or transports fish cannot be certified as a Fisheries Observer. Archipelago would like to congratulate Linda Behnken on winning the prestigious Heinz Awards for the Environment. Linda is the Executive Director of the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association (ALFA), and has been a strong supporter of Archipelago's electronic monitoring (EM) work in Alaska since the beginning.
