Tomorrow (Wednesday September 23rd) was supposed to be our re-opening day, however due to the incoming weather we will not be opening. Weather Statements are calling for severe wind and rain, which will likely cause power outages and dangerous driving conditions. We hope everybody stays safe to ride out the wild weather, and we will see everybody on Friday!

Ruff Life is gearing up to open again on Wednesday September 23rd! We cannot wait to see everyone and get back to business; having a blast! We ask that any doggos who are not feeling well or who have displayed symptoms of either Kennel Cough OR Influenza not attend the daycare for 3 weeks from the date of onset of symptoms. It is very important to prevent the spread of any viruses, so we appreciate everybody’s cooperation!

Did you know that Bordetella (aka kennel cough) is not a core vaccine? You have to ask for it. If you take your dog to a dog park or around any unknown animals, you have no way of knowing what the other dogs have received for vaccinations and therefore what your dog is being exposed to. Though no vaccination gives 100% protection, they greatly reduce the risk of contraction, and severity of symptoms of any of the diseases your pup is vaccinated against. ... We require proof of full vaccinations at Ruff Life, including Bordetella, and Leptospirosis to minimize the risk to your furry friends.

** ATTENTION ** Unfortunately it has been brought to our attention that a dog who attended daycare on Friday has developed symptoms which suggest kennel cough. As per our policy, when something develops that may put your doggos at risk, we follow veterinary guidelines and close the shop. The daycare will be closed for 2 weeks as this virus has a very high transmission risk, and the vets recommend a 2 week shut down to ensure it does not spread. ... Ruff Life's Daycare program will be closed from September 7th - 21st inclusive. Our first day back will be Wednesday September 23rd. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our clients, but the health and safety of your dogs is now and will always be our top priority. We ask that should your dog show any symptoms of Kennel Cough, you bring your dog in to see their veterinarian so that they can be tested and receive the proper treatment required. We also ask that you let us know so that we can monitor the situation. Symptoms of Kennel Cough; - a strong cough, often with a "honking' sound (this is the most obvious symptom) - runny nose - sneezing - lethargy - loss of appetite - low fever Thank you for your understanding and continued support. -Travis & Lindsay

One of the big reasons that so many dog owners struggle to improve their dog’s reliability with following cues around distractions is that they never give their... dog a chance to be SUCCESSFUL around distractions. Practising your training with no distractions is important for when you’re first teaching a new behaviour, but if you’re only training at home your dog won’t get to practise with distractions at all. If you go straight from a no distraction environment to a super busy environment, your dog is likely to struggle and fail more than they succeed. Failing over and over again won’t improve your dog’s reliability around distractions either. Instead, try adding some steps in between the two extremes, so that your dog has the opportunity to successfully respond to their cues around distractions. For example, if your dog will listen to their name in the house, but not at the park, try practising in your back yard. If your dog can walk nicely on leash in your backyard, but not once you step out the gate onto the street, try practising in your yard with the gate open. If coming when called away from playtime with other dogs is too hard, try calling them when they’re looking at a dog in the distance to start with. As your dog's reliability improves, you can gradually increase the difficulty of the distractions, always ensuring your dog is able to succeed. Don’t forget to use high value reinforcers to reward your dog for work around distractions as well!
