Introducing speaker Sofia Stancioff, who will be presenting Writing History Together: The Potentials and Pitfalls of Wikipedia at the 2021 IWB Conference. Sofia Stancioff is a sociologist and activist whose work centres on technology, bias, and gender. Her previous talks have focused on consent, living in community under capitalism, and the power/limits of sci-do imaginaries. Currently, she is the Canadian regional ambassador for Art+Feminism and a film producer living in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal).

IWB is pleased to announce Beth Trembley as one of our speakers for the 2021 IWB Conference. Beth Trembley is an award-winning novelist, essay writer, sketchnoter, and comics maker who works in storytelling via sequential art. Look Again, A Trauma and Six Variations, is her current work in progress, a graphic memoir about trauma, storytelling, and healing. She also advocates for LBGTQ+ rights using graphic novel memoir as her primary medium for storytelling.

We are excited to announce that Reclaiming Our Roots will be presenting on Indigenous youth knowledge mobilization at the 2021 IWB conference! Reclaiming Our Roots is a Mi’kmaw led program that aims to connect Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth with meaningful land-based learning experiences rooted in Mi’kmaw values. Using a youth-centered approach, their guiding values include netukulimk and msit no’kmaq, which can be broadly translated to a commitment to stewardship and su...stainability and respectful relationships among all living and non-living things. Reclaiming Our Roots facilitates engaging land-based learning sessions through workshops and mentoring opportunities year-round which include activities such as harvesting, fishing, plant medicines, material collection, and more. Introducing speaker Alison Brown, who will be presenting The Power of Shared Reading for Families Experiencing Maternal Incarceration. Alison Brown is a part-time instructor in the School of Information Management, the research ethics officer for the Faculty of Management, and a PhD student in Interdisciplinary Studies at Dalhousie University. Her activist and academic work is dedicated to creating spaces where all community members can share and shape their stories, buildi...ng relationships across difference to creative collective belonging. In this presentation, Alison will reveal the findings of a research project that explored the outcomes of a mother-child read aloud project with families experiencing maternal incarceration. Through sharing stories and perspectives of the incarcerated mothers, she will demonstrate how participation in the program empowered them to strengthen relationships, nurture family literacy, and reassert their identities as mothers.
