The Nova Scotia Government has changed its isolation requirements - please be aware that if you are living with someone who has travelled from outside Atlantic Canada into Nova Scotia and is self-isolating everyone in the home where the traveller is self-isolating now needs to self-isolate. For more information please see: https://novascotia.ca/coronavir/restrictions-and-guidance/

It’s been another tough week here at YQY but we just want to take a minute to express how much we appreciate our entire YQY airport team. During this unprecedented time, we’ve had to say see you soon to many of our colleagues. Each member of our team goes out of their way to ensure our small airport survives by helping to provide the best airport experience possible. We always say our little airport has a big personality because our team is like no other. We’re so fortunate to be able to work with so many dedicated people. Thank you to every member of our YQY team for your contributions to our airport, our passengers and our entire industry. We miss you and we’ll see you again soon

Disappointing news for our community today. Air Canada’s route from Sydney to Halifax is cancelled for November, this air service has been in place since 1942 - 78 years! Covid has taken a tremendous toll on the aviation sector and our airport. We need to find safe ways to move forward before the damage done is irreparable. Our Province needs to move toward with a rapid testing pilot program, as a safe alternative to the 14-day quarantine.

Nice to see the RCAF here in Sydney this morning! The JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport is here for the entire Cape Breton Island community, ensuring essential air service access is still available for medical evacuation flights, cargo and military support flights and the movement of essential workers on commercial airlines. Supporting your local airport is now more crucial than ever. When you are looking to fly, we ask that you support your local airport and book from YQY!

Today would have marked the departure of our first Make-A-Wish child of the summer season. One of the highlights of working at our small airport is seeing all of the hard work that the staff and volunteers of the Childrens Wish Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Chapter does to grant incredible wishes for incredible kids throughout the Cape Breton community. We know that there were some pretty special trips planned. We just want all of our wish kids and their families to know that we see you, we miss you, and we cant wait to be apart of your most heart-filled wishes again soon

We want to hear from you! It is important for airports to have a full understanding of what our passengers and the local community expect in a post COVID-19 world. This survey is being done throughout North America, and it will help our industry plan for the new normal. If you could help us by taking a few minutes of your time to complete, we would appreciate hearing your perspective. Thanks! https://lnkd.in/deRiy3q

Just a reminder that Goverment of Canada requires all travellers to have a removable non-medical mask or face covering large enough to cover their mouth and nose during their travel through Canadian airports and in-flight. For information on how to make your own mask, please see: https://www.canada.ca//sew-no-sew-instructions-non-medical

A bit of light now flickering ahead down the tunnel, with Air Canada service to Toronto planning to resume on June 22nd and WestJet continuing to offer service to Halifax twice a week. We will come out of this the same way we are getting through it, together! When you start to plan to fly again, please support your local airport and FlyYQY ! #flyyqy #aircanada #westjet #capebeton

Another important service being maintained at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport. Emergency Health Services (EHS) medivac flights like this one today operate regularly, providing support for essential health services. A huge thank you for your service goes out to all the front line and behind the scene workers who are working tirelessly to keep essential services in place.

J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport 27.03.2020

The JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport is open and supporting the community during these challenging times. Medical emergency and evacuation flights, military training and mail/cargo flights continue to operate, along with twice weekly Westjet service to Halifax, for those who need to fly. We are here during the crisis and will be here to help move people and goods as our nation recovers. Today the C130 Herc from 413 Squadron in Greenwood was doing some training. Thank you to all the women and men working not only on the front lines, but also to those working behind the scenes, for doing so much to keep our community functioning during these challenging times. We will get through this together! #NSStrong #Flyyqy

Air Canada Air Service Suspensions To/From Sydney (YQY) Update April 2, 2020: Air Canada has now confirmed that air service suspensions to/from Sydney (YQY) have been extended until May 31, 2020. This includes Air Canada services to Halifax, as well as Air Canada service to/from Toronto, which is also suspended until May 31, 2020. ... Again, we understand these times have been difficult for our airline partners and their staff. We will continue to support them, as they have supported our community, and we look forward to seeing them back at YQY as soon as possible. Passengers who have travel plans with Air Canada are asked to contact Air Canada directly for assistance. https://www.aircanada.com///home/fly/customer-support.html

J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport 21.02.2020

Earlier this week, our airline partner Air Canada announced it will be laying off over 16,000 employees and substantially reducing route capacity. This announcement has understandably impacted many airports, including our own. Effective April 2, 2020, all Air Canada air service to/from Sydney (YQY) will be suspended until April 30,2020 with the possibility that these route reductions may extend into May. This includes all services to Halifax as well as the previously suspend...ed service to/from Toronto. Any passenger who has made travel plans is asked to contact Air Canada directly for assistance. During these unprecedented and tremendously challenging times, our airline partners, their agents and flight crews, have worked tirelessly to ensure that Canadians get home safely. On behalf of our community, we want to thank both Air Canada and WestJet for their dedication and efforts during these difficult times.

J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport 02.02.2020

Weve extended our change and cancellation policy for travellers in need. Now, flights booked before April 15 can be cancelled with no cancellation fee, for a full credit towards travel completed before April 30, 2021.

Our friends at Halifax Stanfield are hosting a virtual paper airplane contest today. Sorry Halifax, field trips to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site are a right of passage here in Cape Breton. Weve been preparing for this our entire lives (well at least since elementary school). Lets all remind them where the craft of aviation began in Canada #itstartedhere #silverdart #capebretonproud

The first day after March Break has traditionally always been such a fun day for us - kids sharing stories with their teachers and peers about where theyve been, people uploading family pictures from warm beaches or skiing trips, hearing all kinds of stories about all sorts of incredible places. This year is a little different, with a lot less travel and a lot more March Break but wed love for you to share your favourite family travel stories or photos from years past, how your passing time this year, or even your plans for next year to brighten up this sunny spring day! #wereallinthistogether #itwontbeforever #keepourcommunitysafe

In an effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve, the Sydney Airport Authority is implementing the following measures at the J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport: The Sydney Airport Authority is asking the public to refrain from accessing the air terminal building unless they are travelling. This includes self isolating individuals that have recently returned from international travel, as well as passen...gers looking to change or cancel upcoming flights. Travellers looking to make changes, or cancel upcoming flights, are asked to make these changes online or by calling their airlines reservations line for assistance. Chef Todds Catering and Deli will suspend operations effective Friday March 20, until further notice. Coffee, tea, other beverages and snacks are available to purchase in vending machines in our pre boarding security area, as well as snacks and cold drinks from vending machines in the check-in area. Happy Saint Patricks Day We are so fortunate to live in such a connected world where under these circumstances, the number one priority of our entire community needs to be flattening the COVID 19 curve (including limiting travel). At the same time, we can explore so many places from the comforts of home. Sure, virtual tours arent the exact same but someday youll be able to get there. Were all in this together. In honor of Saint Patricks Day, here is a virtual tour of Blarney Castle, one of the most visited attractions in Ireland and home of the famous Blarney Stone. So open that Guinness, tell Alexa to play that The Rankin Family playlist, and go explore Ireland - right from your sofa.

Danny Detheridge and Andrew Downs from our maintenance team are currently out conducting a friction test on Runway 18/36 Friction tests are conducted using specialized equipment on our maintenance trucks to determine the friction index by accelerating to 30-40 KM then applying the breaks every 1000 ft. The decelerometer then calculates the friction index, which is communicated to any incoming aircraft to ensure a safe landing

Happy International Womens Day! Over the last week weve had a lot of conversations around what equality looks like in our industry. We might only be a small airport, but with a female led board of directors, a gender balanced management team, and almost half of our entire staff identifying as female, were making big strides towards gender balance in aviation #IWD2020 #eachforequal
