My delayed but no less important #oakwynkindness post! I donated some funds to this very important initiative in my hometown Victoria. There is a small group of volunteers that organize as many resources as possible and do the incredibly hard job of advocating for the city's most forgotten people. It started with one family organizing donations of basic supplies, gloves, socks, toiletries in backpacks to hand out to the homeless residents of Victoria around Christmas. ... Now they have become a vital resource for them during the pandemic. The city has prevented the installation of volunteer built showers, portable toilets, and handwashing stations to beacon hill park, and they went and removed a supplies tent set up for the people there and turned off the water supply. Many facilities that were open to these folks are closed due to Covid. So they have been left behind and basically forgotten. It's a hard time for everyone, but I am more than thankful to have a WARM and SAFE place to isolate and feel protected. These people have nothing and frequently get their only possessions and HOMES bulldozed and removed aggressively by bylaw officers at the crack of dawn. There is a plan to supposedly move everyone into housing in the spring, so why continue to destroy the encampments between now and then in a pandemic? It's a hot topic in Vancouver and Victoria, and unfortunately I hear more negative things about it than anything. But these people need a little extra compassion these days and they deserve basic human rights too. If you'd also like to contribute to keeping some of our citizens clean, safe, and fed.
