Investors give thanks for positive vaccine news and lower political uncertainty In a week where trading was truncated by holidays in the US and Japan, stocks, bonds and commodities unanimously signaled a growing optimism that economic activity will strengthen into the new year. For the third time in a row, the week began with global equities moving higher in response to a dose of encouraging COVID-19 vaccine news, this time from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The r...ally received a further boost after the US General Services Administration acknowledged Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election, allowing the transition process to proceed more smoothly. Major equity indices in the US including the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and NASDAQ Composite jumped to record highs. Notably, the Dow Jones briefly surpassed the 30,000 mark for the first time. Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite finally climbed back into positive territory on a year-to-date basis. Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average advanced to its highest level since May 1991. Stock market volatility, as measured by the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX), fell to its lowest level since February. Safe haven assets slumped, including gold and government bonds. As bond prices fell, yields moved higher. The expectation of higher demand lifted prices of commodities tied to economic growth.
