Navigating COVID-19 at Jackman Eye Institute

We are happy to be back! JEI is open today, January 22, 2020 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. We ask for your patience as our staff will be in contact with those who were scheduled during the state of emergency. We will do our best to contact you as soon as possible.

For our patients who may have appointments at Eastern Health during the state of emergency, please see below.

JEI will be closed on Tuesday January 21, 2020 due to the state of emergency that remains in effect. We sincerely apologize to our patients at this time for any inconvenience, and we hope that all are safe and sound.

Due to the state of emergency, JEI will remain closed for the remainder of today, Monday January 20th.

JEI can help with dry eye! In a healthy eye, pressure from a blink expresses a small amount of oil from the meibomian glands which is then distributed over the surface of the eye, when the eye opens. Obstruction of the meibomian glands slows the production of oils necessary to reduce aqueous evaporation and minimizes harmful friction between the eyelids and cornea. If left untreated, obstructed glands will reduce oil production, atrophy, and eventually drop out. Once a gland ...has atrophied completely, function is lost permanently, which leads to chronic discomfort and potential damage to the ocular surface. We are excited to announce that JEI can provide dry eye treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) with Lipiflow! The Lipiflow provides thermal pulse technology to the obstructed meibomian gland and, as a result, the meibomian is liquefied and pushed up and out of the gland orifices. Wed love to help make those eyes feel comfortable!

Did you know that everyone is born with a natural lens in their eye? As we age, this lens begins to cause vision problems. Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome (DLS) typically takes place in individuals aged 40 and above. The first stage of DLS is the inability of the eye to focus on nearby objects. The second stage of DLS occurs when people are 50 to 60 years old. At this stage, people may have difficulty reading in dim light and driving at night.... The third stage of DLS is the formation of a cataract. At this stage, vision quality is poor. Does this sound like you? The only way to do great work is to love what you do. Barbara is one of our most recent Vision Correction patients at JEI. Barbara had glasses at a very young age, and with that came many vision problems especially with depth perception and peripheral vision. In her words, having Vision Correction has been life changing. She now has an extended range of vision, and happy to report that she can wake up in the morning and see without glasses and contact lenses! Thank you for sharing your story, Barbara.
