Start Small If you're looking to get the cleanest hole possible, start with a small bit and work your way up to the desired diameter. This might take a little longer with wood, but it results in a much cleaner hole. With metal it's often a faster process to start with a small bit and work your way up.

Helpful tip. Wood Sanding Sand with the grain when hand sanding or using a belt sander. Scratches are hard to see when they run parallel to the grain. But even the lightest scratches across the grain are obvious, especially after staining.
